The World Cup of Hockey is set to make a highly anticipated comeback in 2028, with organizers confirming that the tournament will be hosted across three prominent cities: Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague. This announcement marks the return of the prestigious international hockey competition after its last edition in 2016, reigniting excitement among fans and players alike.

The North American segment of the tournament will take place in the Canadian province of Alberta, where the cities of Calgary and Edmonton will share hosting duties. Meanwhile, Prague will serve as the European hub for the event, providing a key venue for fans across the continent. This multi-city approach aims to maximize accessibility and showcase hockey’s global appeal, bringing together eight nations to compete at the highest level.

Calgary’s brand-new arena, Scotia Place, which is slated to open for the 2027-28 NHL season, will play a significant role in the tournament. It is set to host six round-robin games along with one knockout stage match, offering fans a state-of-the-art facility to witness world-class hockey. Similarly, Prague’s O2 Arena will mirror this schedule, hosting an equal number of games and providing a vibrant atmosphere for European supporters.

The climax of the tournament, including the semi-final matches and the final showdown, will be held at Rogers Place in Edmonton, home to the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. This venue is renowned for its modern amenities and passionate hockey fanbase, making it an ideal location to crown the 2028 champions.

Gary Bettman, the NHL Commissioner, emphasized the unique excitement that the World Cup of Hockey generates, describing it as an unparalleled international sporting event where the world’s best players unite to represent their countries. He expressed enthusiasm about bringing the tournament to these three exceptional venues, highlighting their proven track records in hosting major sporting events and their vibrant local hockey cultures.

Bettman also pointed out that Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague are perfectly positioned to welcome fans from around the world, promising a tournament experience that combines top-tier hockey action with the rich cultural offerings of each city. The event is expected to not only celebrate the sport but also strengthen international hockey ties and fan engagement.

While the exact dates, participating countries, and detailed schedule of the 2028 World Cup of Hockey are yet to be revealed, anticipation is building steadily. The tournament is expected to take place in February, aligning with the international hockey calendar and allowing players to showcase their skills on a global stage.

Marty Walsh, a prominent figure in the hockey community, noted the eagerness among players to return to international competition following the recent Winter Olympics. He praised Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague for their deep-rooted hockey traditions and world-class facilities, underscoring how these cities will provide an ideal backdrop for players to don their national jerseys and compete with pride.

Historically, the World Cup of Hockey has seen fierce competition and memorable moments. The United States men’s national ice hockey team claimed victory in the inaugural 1996 tournament, while Canada secured the title in both 2004 and 2016. The 2028 edition promises to continue this legacy, bringing together elite talent and passionate fans in a celebration of the sport.
