Sydney FC, aiming for a record sixth A-League crown, struggled to respond despite a late chance for captain Rhyan Grant. His glancing header from Joe Lolley’s cross narrowly missed the target in the 83rd minute.
Earlier, Auckland forward Jesse Randall squandered a prime opportunity to secure the win by shooting over from close range.
