Bam Adebayo’s injury during the Miami Heat’s narrow 127-126 loss to the Charlotte Hornets in the play-in tournament has ignited significant controversy. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra criticized LaMelo Ball, insisting the Hornets guard should have been ejected for the incident that sidelined Adebayo with a lower back injury.
The incident occurred early in the second quarter when Ball, after missing a driving attempt, fell and appeared to grab Adebayo’s left leg. This contact caused Adebayo to fall hard onto his back, forcing him to leave the game. Although he was able to walk off the court unaided, he did not return to play.
Spoelstra condemned the play, stating, “He should have been thrown out of the game for that. There is no place in the game for that.” Meanwhile, Ball, who scored 30 points and made the decisive lay-up with 4.7 seconds left in overtime, apologized after the match. He explained that a hit to his head left him disoriented during the sequence.
“I apologize on that one,” Ball said. “I got hit in the head and didn’t really know where I was. I’m going to check on him and make sure he’s OK.” When asked whether the grab was intentional, Ball said he had not seen the replay and was unaware of his actions at the moment.
Officials clarified why no foul was called during the game. Crew chief Zach Zarba noted that since no whistle was blown immediately, the play continued into a fast break, closing the review window. The incident was reviewed during halftime, but any flagrant foul ruling will be determined by the league after the game.
Spoelstra described the play as “dangerous” and “stupid,” though he acknowledged Miami still had opportunities to win despite losing their star player. The Heat forced overtime, with Tyler Herro missing a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation but later making three free throws to briefly put Miami ahead.
Ball responded with a driving lay-up to clinch the victory for Charlotte, ending Miami’s season. Andrew Wiggins called Adebayo’s injury a “gut punch,” while Davion Mitchell described the game as a “high-intensity” and physical contest.
In a significant development, the league is expected to review the incident involving Adebayo in the coming days, potentially leading to further disciplinary action.
