IPL Captain Criticizes Cricket Australia Over Cameron Green’s Bowling Absence

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane took a pointed jab at Cricket Australia following the absence of all-rounder Cameron Green from the bowling attack in their Indian Premier League season opener. Green, who was acquired by Kolkata for a record 252 million rupees ($2.7 million) in the December auction, became the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.

In the match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, Kolkata posted a formidable total of 220 runs. Green contributed with the bat, scoring 18 runs off 10 balls, including a four and a six while batting at number three, before being dismissed. However, the Kolkata bowling unit, missing the services of the Australian international Green, struggled to contain the hosts, who successfully chased the target with five balls remaining.

When questioned about why Green was not utilized as a bowler, Rahane responded sharply, suggesting the question be directed to Cricket Australia. On Monday, Cricket Australia revealed that Green is dealing with a lower back injury that necessitates a temporary break from bowling. A spokesperson explained that Green is currently managing his bowling workload in India and is expected to resume bowling within 10 to 12 days. The Kolkata franchise has been fully informed of his condition.

At 26 years old, Green has been under careful management since undergoing back surgery earlier in 2024. His bowling involvement has been limited recently, having bowled only seven deliveries during the T20 World Cup in February and participating in the Sheffield Shield’s ninth round solely as a batsman.

In a post-match press conference, Rahane acknowledged the challenges posed by injuries to their bowlers but emphasized that this situation presents an opportunity for other players to step up and establish themselves.
