Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar departed for Shanghai, China, on Thursday for a two-day official visit focused on advancing global artificial intelligence collaboration. Pakistan is joining the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO) as a founding member, and Dar will formally sign the agreement during the visit.
In addition to signing the pact, the deputy prime minister will participate in the inauguration of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and engage in the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance. These events provide a platform for international dialogue on AI development and regulation.
During his engagements, Dar is set to present Pakistan’s stance on enhancing global cooperation in AI, emphasizing the developmental priorities and needs of countries in the Global South. His address will highlight the urgency of bridging the digital divide worldwide, advocating for fair access to AI technologies, and promoting capacity-building initiatives.
Notably, Dar will call for frameworks that ensure the advantages of artificial intelligence contribute to sustainable development and foster shared prosperity across nations. On the sidelines of the conference, he is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss issues of mutual interest and strengthen bilateral ties.
Moreover, Dar plans to meet with other foreign dignitaries attending the summit to explore opportunities for cooperation in emerging technologies. This visit marks a significant step in Pakistan’s commitment to playing an active role in shaping the global AI landscape.
