Pakistan has strongly condemned the drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the United Arab Emirates that took place on May 17. The country’s foreign ministry emphasized that targeting nuclear facilities represents a serious breach of international law.
In a statement released on the social media platform X, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s foreign ministry expressed Islamabad’s full solidarity with the UAE government and its people. The statement underscored that any intentional assault on nuclear installations violates multiple legal frameworks, including international humanitarian law, the United Nations Charter, and nuclear safety standards established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Highlighting the gravity of such attacks, the ministry warned that targeting nuclear sites could lead to catastrophic and irreversible consequences affecting human life, the environment, and both regional and global security. It reaffirmed that the protection of civilian nuclear infrastructure is a firmly established international norm that must be respected without exception.
Pakistan urged all parties involved to exercise utmost restraint, adhere strictly to international law, and avoid actions that might escalate tensions further. The statement concluded by emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy, consistent with the principles of the United Nations Charter, remain the only effective means to achieve lasting peace and reduce conflict in the region.
