Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Thursday that the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran remains in effect, yet the ongoing conflict has imposed serious challenges on regional economies, including Pakistan’s. He shared these insights while speaking at a federal cabinet meeting held in Islamabad.
Since the US and Israel initiated their bombing campaign two and a half months ago, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz to all vessels except its own, causing an unprecedented disruption in global energy supplies. Although the US halted bombing operations last month, it imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, further escalating tensions.
In his opening remarks at the cabinet session, the prime minister highlighted the collective efforts of the government’s economic team over the past two years, which are now bearing fruit by stabilizing the economy and avoiding rationing measures. He urged the nation to unite and work diligently to transform Pakistan into an economic powerhouse, emphasizing the same determination that enabled the country to become a responsible nuclear state.
“This is a long and arduous journey, but nations that confront and overcome their challenges are the ones that ultimately succeed,” he said.
Reflecting on the upcoming first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq on May 10, PM Shehbaz recalled how the nation was blessed with pride due to the armed forces’ professionalism and national solidarity. “Our forces displayed exceptional valor, delivering a lesson to the enemy that will not be forgotten,” he remarked.
Looking forward to Youm-e-Takbeer on May 28, the prime minister reminded the nation of the day Pakistan secured an invincible defense in 1998. He stressed that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal serves solely as a deterrent and defensive measure, earning the country international recognition as a responsible nuclear power.
PM Shehbaz paid heartfelt tribute to the pioneers of Pakistan’s nuclear program, particularly acknowledging Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for initiating the project and Nawaz Sharif for its successful completion. He also praised the critical contributions of scientists, politicians, and national institutions in achieving this milestone.
Addressing the sacrifice of Liaquat, a resident of Attock who was martyred confronting a suicide bomber, the prime minister announced that the government had posthumously awarded him the Sitara-e-Shujaat in recognition of his bravery. He added that Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism remain unparalleled.
Later, members of the federal cabinet collectively offered fateha for those who lost their lives in various terror-related incidents across the country, honoring their memory and dedication.
