EU Voices Deep Concern Over Allegations of Hungary Sharing Sensitive EU Data with Russia

The European Union’s executive branch expressed serious concern on Monday following reports that Hungary’s foreign minister allegedly disclosed sensitive information about EU negotiations to Russian officials. These revelations have sparked alarm within Brussels, highlighting growing tensions between Hungary and other EU member states over transparency and trust.

The controversy erupted after the Washington Post published a report on Saturday citing current and former European security officials. the article, Peter Szijjarto, Hungary’s foreign minister, frequently communicated with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, during breaks in EU meetings. The report claims that Szijjarto provided Lavrov with detailed updates on the discussions taking place within the EU and even offered suggestions on potential strategies. This alleged behavior has raised serious questions about Hungary’s loyalty to the collective interests of the European Union.

In response to these accusations, Szijjarto vehemently denied the claims, labeling them as “fake news” and dismissing them as baseless conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for maintaining unusually close ties with Russia despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, also condemned the report. Orban described the situation as a grave violation of Hungary’s sovereignty and announced that he had instructed the justice minister to launch a formal investigation into the matter.

The timing of these allegations is particularly sensitive, coming just days after Hungary blocked a substantial EU loan package worth 90 billion euros (approximately $104 billion) intended to support Ukraine. This move had already provoked significant frustration among EU leaders, many of whom view Hungary’s stance as obstructive to the union’s collective response to the war. The European Commission underscored the importance of trust among member states, with spokeswoman Anitta Hipper emphasizing that mutual confidence is essential for the EU’s effective functioning. She called on the Hungarian government to provide clear explanations to address the concerns raised.

Germany also weighed in on the issue, describing the allegations as “very serious.” A spokesperson for the German foreign ministry highlighted that discussions held within the EU, including those among foreign ministers, are strictly confidential. The ministry made it clear that any breach of this confidentiality would be unacceptable and would not be tolerated. This stance reflects the broader unease within the EU about Hungary’s increasingly divergent policies and its apparent willingness to prioritize bilateral relations with Russia over EU solidarity.

The strained relationship between Hungary and the European Union has been escalating over recent years. Orban’s government has frequently challenged EU norms by obstructing aid to Ukraine and maintaining open channels with Moscow, including high-profile visits to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. These actions have drawn sharp criticism from fellow EU members, who accuse Hungary of undermining the union’s unified stance on Russia and the war in Ukraine.

Following the EU summit last Thursday, many leaders openly expressed their disappointment with Hungary’s continued refusal to support the financial aid package for Ukraine. Behind closed doors, officials have voiced hope that the upcoming Hungarian parliamentary elections on April 12 might lead to a shift in Budapest’s approach. Polls indicate that Orban’s party has been losing ground since last year, which could potentially alter Hungary’s trajectory within the EU.

Adding to the discourse, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on social media platform X, suggesting that the Washington Post’s revelations should not come as a surprise. He remarked that this situation explains why he chooses to speak sparingly and only when absolutely necessary during EU discussions. His statement underscores the growing mistrust and caution among some EU leaders when engaging with Hungary.

As the European Union awaits Hungary’s official response, the incident has intensified debates about the integrity of information sharing and the cohesion of the bloc in the face of external pressures. The unfolding developments will be closely monitored, given their potential implications for EU unity and its foreign policy stance amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
