Junaid Safdar Denies Vienna Trip Amid Honeymoon Rumors and Political Backlash

Junaid Safdar has firmly denied circulating rumors on social media suggesting that he traveled to Vienna on an official government aircraft. In a direct response shared via his Instagram story, he clarified that he never undertook such a trip, putting to rest growing speculation about an alleged honeymoon journey abroad. This public statement came as the controversy gained momentum online, prompting both the Sharif family and the Punjab government to categorically reject the allegations, labeling them as baseless and politically driven.

The controversy initially ignited when various social media posts claimed that a government-owned jet had been dispatched to Vienna for Junaid Safdar’s personal use. Many of these posts insinuated that the trip was connected to his honeymoon or other private travel plans in Europe. These claims quickly attracted widespread attention and criticism, sparking a heated debate about the use of state resources for personal purposes.

In response, the Sharif family issued a strong rebuttal, emphasizing that Junaid Safdar remained in Raiwind and had not traveled to Vienna or any European destination on a special aircraft. Their spokesperson described the reports as entirely false and motivated by political agendas aimed at tarnishing their reputation. The family also indicated that they reserved the right to initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for spreading such unfounded accusations.

Further reinforcing the family’s stance, Junaid Safdar himself took to social media to directly address the rumors. His Instagram story reiterated that he had not been to Vienna, aiming to quell the persistent online chatter. Despite these clarifications, the rumors continued to circulate, prompting a more forceful reaction from government officials.

The Punjab government escalated the matter by announcing plans to take legal action against individuals and media platforms involved in what they described as a deliberate misinformation campaign. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb condemned the spread of fabricated stories regarding the official aircraft’s usage. She declared that the government would invoke the Defamation Law 2024 to hold accountable those propagating falsehoods and warned that attempts to damage public institutions and mislead citizens would no longer be tolerated.

This episode unfolds against the backdrop of earlier criticism surrounding the Punjab government’s acquisition of a Gulfstream 19-seater jet, reportedly costing between $38 million and $42 million—equivalent to over Rs10 billion. The purchase had already sparked controversy, with opposition parties and commentators questioning the prudence of investing in a luxury aircraft amid Pakistan’s ongoing economic challenges.

The latest wave of allegations intensified when flight tracking information appeared to show the aircraft returning from Vienna to Lahore. However, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari clarified that the plane had been on a scheduled technical inspection trip, a routine procedure required under contractual obligations. She described the speculation as inaccurate and unfortunate, accusing critics of exploiting a standard maintenance operation for political gain.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, particularly those led by PTI, have continued to criticize the government’s expenditure on the VIP aircraft. They argue that such lavish spending is unjustifiable at a time when many Pakistanis face severe economic hardships, including inflation and unemployment. The debate highlights the broader tensions over government spending priorities and accountability in the current political climate.
