Israeli Foreign Minister Rejects Claims of Ballistic Interceptor Shortages Amid Ongoing Conflict

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar firmly dismissed reports on Sunday suggesting that Israel is experiencing a critical shortage of ballistic missile interceptors. These claims emerged after more than two weeks of intense conflict marked by frequent missile and drone attacks launched by Iran and its allied militant group Hezbollah, operating from Lebanon. The ongoing hostilities have put Israel’s missile defense capabilities under significant strain, prompting speculation about the sustainability of its interceptor supplies.

The controversy began when an American news outlet published a report citing an unnamed U.S. official who alleged that Israel had informed Washington about dangerously low stocks of ballistic missile interceptors. This revelation sparked concerns about Israel’s preparedness to defend itself against the barrage of attacks. However, when questioned about the accuracy of these assertions, as well as reports hinting at imminent direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, Saar categorically denied both claims, stating simply, “For both questions, the answer is no.”

Supporting Saar’s statement, a senior source within the Israeli military also refuted the shortage allegations. The official emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) remain fully equipped and ready to sustain a prolonged military campaign if necessary. This reassurance comes amid a backdrop of relentless missile fire from Iran, which, the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) at Tel Aviv University, has launched nearly 300 ballistic missiles toward Israeli territory since the conflict escalated following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets on February 28.

It is important to note that approximately half of these missiles reportedly carried cluster munitions, a particularly destructive type of ordinance. Despite the intensity of these attacks, Israeli military officials have observed a notable decline in the daily number of missiles fired compared to the initial days of the war. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has actively participated in the hostilities by launching rockets from Lebanon since March 2, further complicating the security situation along Israel’s northern border.

Amid these developments, Israeli media outlets, including Haaretz, have speculated about the possibility of direct talks between Israel and Lebanon in the near future. These reports cite unnamed sources familiar with the matter, suggesting a diplomatic initiative could be underway. Additionally, Israel’s Army Radio disclosed that Ron Dermer, a close confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli minister, recently traveled to Saudi Arabia. His visit reportedly aimed to explore a new diplomatic framework for engaging Lebanon, with the intention of initiating talks once the current military operations against Hezbollah conclude.

Despite these reports, official responses from the Israeli government have been cautious. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Netanyahu did not immediately comment on the matter when approached. Meanwhile, Energy Minister Eli Cohen, speaking on the radio, neither confirmed nor dismissed the possibility of negotiations. However, he expressed skepticism about reaching any meaningful agreement before the Lebanese government takes decisive action against Hezbollah. Cohen also revealed that Israel’s security cabinet—a select group of senior ministers responsible for critical national decisions—has discussed the potential cancellation of the 2022 maritime border agreement between Israel and Lebanon, although no formal steps have been taken in this regard.

As the conflict continues to unfold, these developments highlight the complex interplay between military readiness, diplomatic maneuvering, and regional security dynamics. Israel’s firm denial of interceptor shortages aims to project confidence in its defense capabilities, while the tentative diplomatic signals suggest a cautious approach toward resolving tensions with Lebanon. The coming days will likely prove crucial in determining whether military confrontation or dialogue will shape the future of this volatile region.
