PM Shehbaz Sharif Orders Strategic Export Plan for Surplus Food to Gulf Nations

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken a decisive step by instructing government officials to develop a thorough and well-coordinated plan aimed at exporting surplus food products to Gulf countries. This directive came during a high-level meeting held in Lahore on Sunday, where the prime minister emphasized the importance of balancing export ambitions with the need to fully satisfy Pakistan’s internal food demands.

The meeting focused extensively on the current state of the nation’s food security, with officials reviewing stock levels and production capacities across various agricultural sectors. Given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the prime minister underscored the necessity of closely monitoring both supply and demand to ensure that Pakistan’s essential food requirements are never compromised. This cautious approach reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the domestic market while exploring new export opportunities.

Highlighting the shifting dynamics in the regional and global markets, PM Shehbaz pointed out that disruptions in international supply chains have created a unique window for Pakistan to increase its food exports, particularly to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. He stressed that maintaining stringent quality standards is critical to enhancing the reputation of Pakistani food products in these brotherly nations, which have traditionally been important trade partners.

In addition to export quality, the prime minister directed the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to implement necessary measures that would streamline maritime logistics and facilitate smoother transportation of goods to Gulf ports. This move aims to reduce bottlenecks and ensure timely delivery, which is vital for perishable commodities such as meat, poultry, dairy, and seafood.

The briefing provided during the meeting revealed that Pakistan currently holds ample stocks of essential food items, with no immediate shortages anticipated. The agricultural sector’s robust production, spanning crops to livestock and seafood, was highlighted as a major asset with considerable potential to boost foreign exchange earnings through exports.

To maintain close oversight, PM Shehbaz Sharif ordered the establishment of a dedicated committee tasked with daily monitoring of the food supply situation and export progress. Furthermore, he instructed Pakistani ambassadors and trade representatives stationed in Gulf countries to adopt a proactive stance, ensuring that trade relations are strengthened and export opportunities are maximized in real-time.

This initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to capitalize on Pakistan’s agricultural strengths amid evolving geopolitical and economic conditions. By carefully managing domestic needs while expanding export markets, the prime minister aims to support farmers, enhance economic stability, and strengthen Pakistan’s position as a reliable food supplier in the region.
