The ambitious housing program launched by the Punjab government, known as ‘Apni Chat, Apna Ghar’, has witnessed an overwhelming response, with registrations now exceeding 1.9 million individuals. This flagship initiative, aimed at providing affordable housing solutions to low-income families across the province, continues to gain momentum as the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) closely monitors its progress.
To date, the scheme has received more than 1.135 million formal applications from prospective beneficiaries eager to secure their own homes. During a comprehensive briefing session held with Bilal Yasin, the Provincial Minister overseeing housing affairs, Skandar Zeeshan, the Director General of PHATA, provided an in-depth update on the current status and future plans of the project. He highlighted that interest-free loans have already been extended to 131,680 individuals to facilitate the construction of their homes, with an additional 18,375 applicants expected to receive financial assistance within the current month.
Construction activities under the scheme are progressing steadily throughout Punjab. So far, 83,330 houses have been successfully completed, offering families a secure and dignified living environment. Meanwhile, another 45,425 homes are actively under construction, reflecting the government’s commitment to accelerating housing development. The total budget allocated for this massive undertaking has surpassed Rs183 billion, demonstrating significant investment in addressing the housing shortage. Of this amount, Rs8.4 billion has already been recovered, indicating a sustainable financial model underpinning the program.
Minister Bilal Yasin emphasized that ‘Apni Chat, Apna Ghar’ has set new standards in terms of service delivery and the scale of its impact. He pointed out that as part of the scheme’s unique features, 2,000 families have been granted free plots, further easing the path to homeownership for the most vulnerable segments of society. Looking ahead, the Chief Minister of Punjab plans to officially transfer ownership rights to deserving families shortly after Eid-ul-Fitr, a move that will provide legal security and peace of mind to thousands of beneficiaries.
It is important to recall that earlier this year, in 2024, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif unveiled a comprehensive housing strategy aimed at constructing 100,000 homes specifically for low-income individuals. During a high-level meeting convened in Lahore to discuss the implementation of this ambitious target, the Chief Minister called for a detailed, district-wise plan to ensure effective execution. The meeting concluded with a decision to build over 3,000 houses in each district of Punjab, reflecting a province-wide commitment to tackling housing shortages and improving living standards for economically disadvantaged communities.
As the ‘Apni Chat, Apna Ghar’ project continues to expand, it remains a cornerstone of Punjab’s social welfare agenda, promising to transform the lives of millions by providing affordable, quality housing. The government’s sustained efforts to streamline loan disbursement, oversee construction, and ensure timely ownership transfers underscore its dedication to fulfilling the housing needs of its citizens.
