EU Council President Warns Russia Benefits Most from Middle East Conflict Amid Global Turmoil

In a stark address delivered to European Union ambassadors in Brussels on Tuesday, EU Council President Antonio Costa underscored that Russia has emerged as the principal beneficiary of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. As the war continues to unfold, soaring energy prices have inadvertently bolstered Russia’s financial resources, enabling it to sustain its military campaign in Ukraine with greater ease. Costa’s remarks shed light on the complex geopolitical ramifications that extend far beyond the immediate battlegrounds.

He elaborated that the escalation in energy costs has provided Russia with a significant economic windfall, allowing Moscow to replenish its war chest amid international sanctions and diplomatic isolation. Meanwhile, the global focus has shifted away from the Ukrainian front, as the Middle East conflict commands greater attention from world powers and media alike. This diversion has effectively reduced the pressure on Russia, which benefits strategically from the reallocation of military assets that might otherwise have been deployed to support Ukraine.

Highlighting the broader implications, Costa warned that the current crisis threatens to undermine the international rules-based order, a framework that has long been championed by the European Union to maintain global stability. He pointedly noted that this order is now facing challenges not only from Russia but also from actions taken by the United States, signaling a period of heightened geopolitical tension and uncertainty. The EU leader called for a renewed commitment to diplomacy, emphasizing that all parties involved in the Middle East conflict must urgently return to the negotiating table to prevent further deterioration.

“Freedom and human rights cannot be secured through military means,” Costa asserted, stressing that only adherence to international law can guarantee lasting peace and justice. He cautioned against any further escalation, warning that continued violence poses a grave threat not only to the Middle East but also to Europe and the wider international community. His message reflected deep concern over the potential for the conflict to spiral into a broader regional or even global crisis.

The EU’s stance, as articulated by Costa, calls for a balanced approach that prioritizes dialogue and legal frameworks over armed confrontation. This perspective resonates with ongoing efforts by European diplomats to mediate tensions and promote stability in a region long plagued by conflict. As the world watches closely, the challenge remains to navigate these turbulent times without allowing geopolitical rivalries to deepen divisions or exacerbate human suffering.
