Barrister Gohar Declares Recent Petroleum Price Hike Unconstitutional and Illegal

Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, strongly criticized the recent surge in petroleum prices, labeling the Rs 55 hike as both illegal and unconstitutional. Speaking to journalists gathered outside the Parliament House in Islamabad, he expressed deep concerns over the government’s decision to raise fuel costs, emphasizing that such a move violates legal and constitutional norms.

During his address, Barrister Gohar highlighted the efforts made by PTI members to secure a platform within the assembly to voice their opposition to the price increase. Despite their persistent attempts, they were reportedly denied the opportunity to present their case, which he described as a deliberate suppression of dissenting voices in the legislature. This, he argued, undermines democratic principles and transparency in governance.

He further elaborated on the specifics of the price hike, pointing out that oil marketing companies are mandated to maintain adequate stock levels to avoid sudden shortages. However, at the time of the increase, there was reportedly no available stock, raising questions about the justification behind the sudden rise in prices. Barrister Gohar suggested that this lack of stock should have prevented any price adjustments, making the government’s decision all the more questionable.

Adding historical context, he recalled that the government had already implemented a petroleum price increase on February 28, which was intended to last for only two weeks. Despite this recent adjustment, the authorities proceeded with another hike, which he described as an unlawful and unjustified action. This sequence of events, him, reflects a disregard for public interest and fiscal responsibility.

Moreover, Barrister Gohar criticized the allocation of public funds, stating that taxpayer money should not be funneled into oil marketing companies under such circumstances. He implied that the government’s approach benefits corporate interests at the expense of ordinary citizens, who are burdened with escalating fuel costs. His remarks underscore growing public frustration over rising inflation and economic mismanagement.

In conclusion, Barrister Gohar’s comments resonate with a broader narrative of political opposition challenging government policies on economic grounds. His condemnation of the petroleum price increase adds to the mounting pressure on authorities to reconsider their stance and adopt measures that protect consumer rights and uphold constitutional mandates.
