Punjab Revamps Practical Exam Marking to Boost Transparency in Board Exams

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the transparency and fairness of board examinations, Punjab’s education authorities have rolled out a revamped system for awarding practical marks. This new approach seeks to address longstanding concerns regarding the subjective evaluation of practical exams, which has often been criticized for inconsistencies and potential biases.

Under the newly introduced framework, the process of assigning marks for practical exams will be split into two distinct components. The written segment of the practical examination will now be evaluated centrally by the respective education boards through a standardized marking system. This centralization is expected to minimize discrepancies and ensure that students across the province are assessed on an equal footing.

Meanwhile, the role of examiners stationed at examination centers has been redefined. These examiners will no longer have the authority to award full marks independently. Instead, their responsibility will be limited to assigning a portion of the marks based on students’ viva voce responses and their hands-on performance during the practical tests. This adjustment aims to balance the need for direct observation of practical skills with the necessity of maintaining objective grading standards.

The initial rollout of this system will focus on practical exams in key science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science. These disciplines, which heavily rely on practical assessments, stand to benefit significantly from the new marking policy. Education officials have emphasized that this pilot phase will help refine the process before potentially expanding it to other subjects.

Importantly, the policy is designed to be implemented uniformly across all educational boards within Punjab. This province-wide application underscores the government’s commitment to creating a cohesive and standardized examination environment. By doing so, authorities hope to eliminate regional disparities and build greater confidence among students, parents, and educators in the integrity of the assessment system.

Overall, this reform reflects Punjab’s proactive approach to modernizing its examination procedures and aligning them with best practices. As the education sector continues to evolve, such measures are crucial in fostering an environment where academic evaluations are both credible and equitable, ultimately benefiting the students who are the cornerstone of the province’s future.
