US Marine Veteran Disrupted Senate Hearing, Injured During Protest Over Israel Policy

Brian McGinnis, a former United States Marine and current Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina, was involved in a dramatic confrontation during a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing on Wednesday. McGinnis interrupted the proceedings by vocally opposing the U.S. and Israel’s military strikes on Iran, declaring that America should not be fighting on behalf of Israel. The protest quickly escalated into a physical altercation with Capitol Police officers and Republican Senator Tim Sheehy, resulting in McGinnis sustaining a broken arm.

The incident unfolded when McGinnis, dressed in military attire, shouted, “Israel is the reason for this war, America does not want to fight for Israel,” disrupting the hearing. Video footage captured the tense moments as officers and Senator Sheehy attempted to remove him from the doorway. During the struggle, McGinnis’s hand became trapped in the door hinge, and a cracking sound was audible, indicating the severity of his injury. Witnesses at the scene voiced concern as McGinnis continued to protest despite the pain.

Following the altercation, McGinnis was charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing an unlawful demonstration. Despite the charges and his injury, McGinnis reaffirmed his commitment to his political campaign on social media, emphasizing that his resolve had only strengthened. He stated, “I’ve been running long before this, and yes even after breaking my arm standing up for what I believe in. It’s only made me more determined. Anger is real, and so is resolve.”

Senator Tim Sheehy, who represents Montana, explained his involvement in the incident, noting that he stepped in to help de-escalate the situation. Sheehy described McGinnis as an “unhinged protester” who was actively resisting removal from the hearing. He expressed hope that McGinnis would receive the help he needs without further violence. Capitol Police reported that three officers were treated for injuries sustained during the scuffle, and McGinnis himself was also treated for his broken arm.

This confrontation comes amid heightened tensions following a large-scale military campaign launched against Iran on Saturday, which has intensified conflict across the Middle East. The coordinated strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces targeted multiple sites within Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran against Israel and neighboring Gulf Arab states. The volatile situation has sparked widespread protests and political debates within the United States regarding the country’s role in the conflict.

Brian McGinnis’s background adds further context to his protest. his campaign website, he enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately after graduating from high school and served for four years. His social media profiles portray him as a veteran, firefighter, and father of four children. Running under the Green Party banner, McGinnis represents a third-party alternative that appeals to some independent voters, although the Green Party currently holds no seats in the U.S. Senate.

As McGinnis recovers from his injuries, his family has requested that he refrain from public engagements for the time being. The incident has sparked discussions about the limits of protest within government institutions and the growing polarization surrounding U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. It remains to be seen how this event will impact McGinnis’s Senate campaign and the broader political discourse on America’s involvement in international conflicts.
