UN Panel Condemns Deadly Strike on Iranian Girls’ School Killing Over 160 Children

A United Nations panel of independent experts has voiced profound distress following the tragic bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school located in Minab, southern Iran. The attack, which took place on Saturday, reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 160 children, multiple reports. This devastating incident coincided with the first day of military operations involving U.S. and Israeli forces targeting Iranian sites.

The strike on the educational institution has sparked international outrage, with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child emphasizing the severe impact such attacks have on young lives. The committee, comprised of 18 independent specialists tasked with overseeing the enforcement of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, underscored the imperative to protect children from the horrors of armed conflict. They highlighted that schools and hospitals, as civilian infrastructure, must remain off-limits during hostilities to safeguard vulnerable populations.

In the aftermath of the bombing, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly stated on Monday that American forces would never intentionally target a school, seeking to distance the U.S. from responsibility for the tragic event. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities announced they are conducting an investigation into the incident to determine the facts surrounding the attack. The international community awaits the outcome of these inquiries as calls for transparency grow louder.

Adding to the pressure for accountability, the United Nations human rights office issued a statement on Tuesday urging those responsible for the deadly strike on the girls’ school to carry out a thorough investigation and share their findings. Notably, the statement refrained from assigning blame to any particular party, focusing instead on the urgent need for clarity and justice for the victims.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, formally raised the matter with U.N. human rights chief Volker Turk through a letter dated March 1. In his correspondence, Bahreini condemned the attack as “unjustifiable” and “criminal,” calling for international recognition of the gravity of the situation. This diplomatic move highlights Iran’s demand for accountability and the protection of its civilian population amid escalating regional tensions.

The tragic loss of so many young lives at the Shajareh Tayyebeh school has once again brought to the forefront the devastating human cost of conflict, particularly on children who should be shielded from violence. The United Nations and global actors continue to stress the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and ensuring that all parties involved in the conflict respect the sanctity of civilian spaces such as schools and hospitals.
