Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a crucial meeting on Wednesday, bringing together leaders from various parliamentary parties and key political representatives to discuss the pressing regional security landscape. Emphasizing the importance of national unity and collective resolve, the Prime Minister underscored the need for solidarity among political factions during these challenging times. The gathering aimed to provide an in-depth, confidential briefing on multiple security concerns impacting Pakistan and its neighborhood.

The closed-door session focused extensively on the complex situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, highlighting ongoing tensions and security threats emanating from the region. Additionally, the briefing covered recent developments in Iran, the escalating conflict in the Middle East, and the broader Gulf region dynamics. Participants were also updated on Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives designed to navigate these volatile circumstances and promote regional stability.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shared insights into his recent diplomatic engagements, particularly his communications with leaders from Middle Eastern countries amid rising regional tensions. These efforts reflect Pakistan’s proactive stance in seeking peaceful resolutions and safeguarding its strategic interests. The Prime Minister’s detailed account aimed to keep the political leadership fully informed and engaged in the country’s foreign policy direction.

The parliamentary leaders present expressed their candid views on the security challenges and lauded the government’s diplomatic endeavors to foster peace in the region. They collectively emphasized the necessity to intensify these efforts further, offering constructive suggestions on how Pakistan can better position itself amid shifting geopolitical currents. A unanimous commitment was voiced to continue combating terrorism within Pakistan’s borders, reinforcing the shared goal of ensuring national security.

Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar proposed convening a joint parliamentary session to deliberate on the unfolding situations in Afghanistan and the Middle East. This session would feature briefings by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, aimed at providing lawmakers from both opposition and government benches with a comprehensive understanding of Pakistan’s role in the evolving regional environment. This initiative reflects a desire for greater parliamentary involvement in foreign policy discussions.

Among the prominent attendees were Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa Shah, and Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, along with federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Attaullah Tarar, also participated in the session, demonstrating broad political representation.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, triggered by recent US and Israeli military actions targeting Iran, which reportedly resulted in the death of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This development has added a new layer of complexity to regional security and diplomatic relations.

Simultaneously, Pakistan continues to grapple with persistent threats from cross-border terrorism linked to elements operating from Afghanistan. In response, the Pakistani military has intensified ground and aerial operations under the banner of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. Launched on February 27, this operation targets Afghan Taliban militants and Fitna al-Khawarij factions responsible for orchestrating attacks across the border, aiming to restore security and stability in the affected border areas.

Overall, the meeting highlighted the government’s commitment to keeping political stakeholders informed and united in addressing the multifaceted security challenges facing Pakistan. It also underscored the critical role of diplomacy and coordinated domestic efforts in safeguarding the nation’s interests amid a rapidly changing regional security environment.
