US Orders Departure of Non-Essential Staff from Karachi and Lahore Amid Rising Tensions

The United States State Department announced on Wednesday that it has instructed all non-emergency American government employees and their family members stationed at the US consulates in Karachi and Lahore to evacuate Pakistan immediately. This directive comes as a precautionary measure in response to growing security concerns in the region, reflecting heightened tensions linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

In an official statement, the US Embassy in Pakistan clarified that this evacuation order specifically targets non-essential personnel at the consulates, while the status of the US Embassy in Islamabad remains unchanged for the time being. The decision underscores the seriousness of the security environment in Pakistan’s two largest cities, Karachi and Lahore, where recent events have raised alarms about the safety of American diplomatic staff.

This development unfolds against the backdrop of intensified hostilities involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. Recent military actions have seen Israeli forces conducting airstrikes inside Iran, which in turn has prompted retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran targeting US interests and military bases across the Gulf region. The conflict has escalated dramatically, with significant casualties reported on both sides, including the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials and six US military personnel.

One of the most consequential incidents fueling unrest was the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described by Iranian authorities as an “unprovoked and unwarranted” attack carried out by Israeli and American forces. This event has been marked as a pivotal moment, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard vowing severe retaliation and warning that such actions will not go unanswered. The assassination has sparked widespread outrage and protests globally, including in Pakistan, where demonstrators have expressed vehement anti-American and anti-Israel sentiments.

In Karachi, the situation escalated when protesters breached the outer perimeter of the US consulate compound, causing significant damage to the property. The violent confrontation resulted in at least 11 fatalities, highlighting the volatile security conditions on the ground. Reports also emerged that US Marines stationed at the consulate opened fire during the unrest, although it remains unclear whether the gunfire caused any casualties. There is also uncertainty about whether other security personnel, including local police and private guards, discharged weapons during the incident.

In response to the deteriorating security situation and the violent protests, the US Embassy in Islamabad, along with the Consulate Generals in Karachi and Lahore, suspended all visa services and American Citizen Services (ACS). Initially, all appointments scheduled for March 2 were canceled, with the suspension later extended through March 6. The embassy has informed affected applicants that routine visa processing will remain on hold during this period, and guidance will be provided for rescheduling once services resume.

While the US authorities have not disclosed detailed specifics regarding the security threats prompting these measures, the move signals a cautious approach amid an increasingly unstable environment. The evacuation of non-essential personnel aims to safeguard American lives while diplomatic channels continue to monitor the evolving situation closely. This episode highlights the broader implications of regional conflicts spilling over into diplomatic missions and the challenges faced by foreign governments operating in Pakistan during times of heightened geopolitical tension.
