Justin Timberlake Seeks Court Order to Block Release of DWI Arrest Footage

Justin Timberlake has initiated legal proceedings aimed at preventing the public disclosure of police body camera footage related to his arrest for driving while intoxicated in June 2024. The 45-year-old singer-songwriter submitted a formal petition on Monday, March 2, in Suffolk County Supreme Court, requesting that the video evidence remain sealed and inaccessible to the public eye. This move comes amid growing media interest and a formal request for the footage under New York’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).

In the petition, Timberlake’s legal team emphasized the potential damage that releasing the video could inflict on both his personal life and professional career. They argued that making the footage public would result in “severe and irreparable harm” to his reputation, exposing him to unwarranted public ridicule and harassment. The filing stressed that the dissemination of such material would not serve any legitimate public interest, but rather only fuel sensationalism and invade his privacy.

His attorneys, Edward Burke Jr. and Michael J. Del Piano, further contended that the video contains sensitive information beyond the scope of public concern. They highlighted that the footage would reveal details about Timberlake’s vehicle and other private aspects unrelated to government transparency or public oversight. This argument underscores the legal tension between the public’s right to information and an individual’s right to privacy, especially for high-profile personalities.

The petition was filed shortly after the Sag Harbor Village Police Department, along with Police Chief Robert Drake and the Village of Sag Harbor, received a formal request for the body camera footage under the FOIL statute. In response, Timberlake’s lawyers have urged the court to grant an emergency stay, effectively blocking any release of the video unless a judge explicitly orders otherwise. This legal maneuver aims to protect the singer from premature exposure while the case and related matters are still under judicial consideration.

Justin Timberlake was taken into custody on June 18, 2024, following an incident in Sag Harbor, New York. Authorities reported that he was driving a 2025 BMW when he allegedly ran a stop sign and failed to maintain his lane. As a result, he faced one count of driving while intoxicated along with two traffic violations. The arrest attracted significant media coverage given Timberlake’s celebrity status, intensifying public scrutiny of the case.

This legal battle highlights the ongoing challenges celebrities face in balancing transparency with privacy rights, especially in cases involving law enforcement footage. As the court considers Timberlake’s petition, the outcome may set important precedents regarding the handling of sensitive video evidence in high-profile arrests. Meanwhile, the public and media continue to watch closely, awaiting further developments in this unfolding story.
