Sindh Government Declares Two-Day Holiday for Hindu Community on Holi Festival

The Sindh government has officially declared March 3 and 4 as public holidays specifically for the Hindu community to celebrate the vibrant festival of Holi. This announcement was made on Monday, reflecting the provincial administration’s recognition of the cultural and religious significance of Holi for the Hindu minority residing in Sindh. The decision underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to accommodate and respect the diverse religious practices within the province.

In a statement, Sukhdev Hemnani, the spokesperson for the Sindh government, extended warm Holi greetings to the Hindu community. He emphasized that the provincial administration remains steadfast in upholding the principles of religious freedom and safeguarding the rights of minority groups. Hemnani highlighted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led government is committed to fostering an environment of equal citizenship, inclusivity, and interfaith harmony throughout Sindh, which is home to a rich mosaic of ethnic and religious communities.

To ensure the safety and security of those celebrating, the provincial authorities have issued clear instructions to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to implement comprehensive security measures at all Hindu places of worship as well as communal gathering spots. This proactive approach aims to provide a secure atmosphere where festivities can proceed without any disruptions, reflecting the government’s dedication to protecting minority communities during their religious observances.

In a related development, about a week prior, Sindh’s Minister for Universities and Boards, Ismail Rahu, directed all educational boards in the province to avoid scheduling examinations during the periods of Holi and Easter. Specifically, he instructed that no exams should be held from April 2 to April 6, allowing students to participate fully in these important religious celebrations. Any exams postponed due to this directive are set to resume from April 7 onwards. This decision was taken following an application submitted by the principal of St Patrick High School in Karachi, reflecting sensitivity towards the academic and cultural needs of minority students.

Furthermore, educational boards have been tasked with revising their examination timetables immediately and submitting compliance reports to the government. This measure ensures that minority religious observances are respected and accommodated within the academic calendar. Such steps highlight the Sindh government’s broader strategy to promote inclusivity and respect for all communities, reinforcing its role as a province that values diversity and peaceful coexistence.
