Oman Shifts Musandam Schools to Online Learning Amid Rising Regional Security Concerns

The Ministry of Education in Oman announced on Monday that all schools in the Musandam Governorate will transition to online classes for the remainder of the week. This decision comes as a precautionary measure in response to the heightened security situation unfolding in the region. The ministry emphasized that the safety and well-being of students and educational staff remain their top priority during these uncertain times.

In its official statement, the ministry explained that the move to remote learning is temporary and will be continually reassessed based on the evolving circumstances. Parents, teachers, and students have been advised to stay alert for further updates as authorities monitor the situation closely. This shift marks a significant disruption to the usual academic routine in Musandam, a governorate known for its strategic location and proximity to sensitive maritime routes.

The announcement follows a recent attack on an oil tanker near the Musandam Peninsula, which has further intensified concerns about regional security. On Sunday, the Oman Maritime Security Centre reported that the tanker Skylight was struck approximately five nautical miles north of Khasab Port, situated along the critical Strait of Hormuz. The assault resulted in injuries to four crew members, who were promptly evacuated to safety. The tanker’s crew consisted of 15 Indian and five Iranian nationals, highlighting the multinational nature of maritime operations in the area.

While the exact cause of the attack has not been disclosed, it comes amid a series of drone strikes targeting locations within Oman, including the commercial port of Duqm on the Arabian Sea. These incidents represent a worrying escalation, marking the first time that targets in or near Oman have been directly hit amid ongoing retaliatory actions by Tehran. These strikes are part of a broader cycle of conflict triggered by joint U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran, which have significantly heightened tensions across the Gulf region.

Adding to the complexity, the tanker Skylight and its managing company, Red Sea Ship Management, were sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury in December 2025. The sanctions accused the company of operating a covert fleet used to transport Iranian petroleum products through the Gulf, underscoring the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding maritime traffic in this strategic corridor.

Musandam’s geographic importance cannot be overstated, as it shares control over the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. This narrow waterway is a vital global chokepoint, through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply is transported. Any disruption here has far-reaching implications for international energy markets and regional stability.

Earlier on Sunday, Oman’s state news agency confirmed that two drones targeted the commercial port of Duqm, injuring one expatriate worker. Debris from a separate drone fell dangerously close to fuel storage tanks, though fortunately, no casualties or significant damage were reported in that instance. In response to these escalating threats, the Royal Oman Police have issued a directive urging fishermen and operators of tourist vessels in Musandam to avoid venturing into the sea until the security situation improves.

As Oman navigates this tense period, the government’s swift actions to protect its citizens and critical infrastructure highlight the delicate balance required to maintain peace and security in a region fraught with geopolitical rivalries. The coming days will be crucial in determining how the situation unfolds and what further measures may be necessary to safeguard the area’s stability.
