Global Powers Urge Restraint Amid Escalating US-Israel Strikes on Iran

The international community has been shaken following a series of coordinated military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against strategic military and political targets within Iran on Saturday. These operations, which US President Donald Trump characterized as “major combat operations,” have set off a chain reaction, with Iran responding through missile attacks directed at Israel and US military bases stationed in the Gulf region. This rapid escalation has raised widespread concerns about the potential for a broader and more dangerous conflict engulfing the Middle East.

In the wake of these developments, China and Russia have taken prominent roles in calling for de-escalation, emphasizing the importance of respecting Iran’s sovereignty and urging all parties to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed deep apprehension over the recent strikes, demanding an immediate halt to all military activities. The spokesperson underscored the necessity of upholding Iran’s national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and advocated for a return to diplomatic dialogue and negotiation as the path to restoring peace and stability in the volatile region.

Simultaneously, Russia has strongly condemned the US-led military actions. Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s Deputy Security Council Chairman, accused Washington of exploiting ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran as a pretext to justify its aggressive military campaign. The Russian Foreign Ministry called upon the global community to assess these “irresponsible actions” objectively, warning that they could further destabilize an already fragile Middle East.

The reactions from within the Middle East have been equally charged. Iran vehemently denounced the strikes as blatant violations of its sovereignty and breaches of international law, specifically citing Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. Tehran declared its intention to mount a “decisive and powerful” defense to protect its homeland, while also highlighting that it had previously prioritized diplomatic efforts to avoid such a conflict. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Hezbollah condemned the US and Israeli strikes as a flagrant violation of international norms and accused them of attempting to destabilize the region to enforce foreign domination. Hezbollah expressed solidarity with Iran and urged the regional populace to recognize and resist what it described as an aggressive external agenda.

On the global diplomatic front, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate end to hostilities, warning that the escalating violence poses a grave threat to civilian lives and regional stability. He announced that the UN Security Council would convene an emergency session to address the crisis. European leaders also voiced their concerns; European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa urged all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint, safeguard civilian populations, and adhere strictly to international law. French President Emmanuel Macron called for an urgent Security Council meeting, emphasizing the potentially severe consequences this conflict could have on international peace and security. The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, confirmed British forces are engaged in coordinated defensive operations and urged Iran to cease its weapons programs and violence against its own people.

Humanitarian organizations have also weighed in. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) cautioned against the dangerous escalation, with its President Mirjana Spoljaric warning of a possible chain reaction of military confrontations across the Middle East that could have devastating consequences for civilian populations.

Meanwhile, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have expressed strong condemnation of the recent hostilities. Oman, acting as a crucial mediator in US-Iran negotiations, voiced disappointment over the outbreak of violence. Its Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, called for Washington to avoid further entanglement and urged an immediate ceasefire, advocating for an emergency UN Security Council meeting. Qatar condemned the Iranian missile attacks on its territory, home to the Al Udeid Air Base where US troops are stationed, labeling the strikes as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty and reserving the right to respond under international law. The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting several missiles and described Iran’s actions as a dangerous escalation threatening civilian safety. Bahrain condemned the missile attacks targeting the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters, calling the assault “treacherous,” while Kuwait also condemned attacks on its soil and warned that any further escalation would exacerbate regional instability. Saudi Arabia issued a stern statement condemning the Iranian missile strikes and warned of “dire consequences” should the aggression persist. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry called for an end to the spiral of violence, noting that the crisis was ignited by the US-Israel strikes on Iran.

In South Asia, Pakistan and India have both urged restraint amidst the growing tensions. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar strongly condemned the attacks and appealed for an immediate halt to all escalatory measures, emphasizing the urgent need to resume diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. India’s Ministry of External Affairs echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy while reiterating respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations. This statement came shortly after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel, which highlighted the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Voices from Europe and beyond have also contributed to the discourse. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry pointed to Iran’s crackdown on protesters earlier in the year as a factor contributing to the current volatility. Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide criticized Israel’s initial strike, stating it did not meet international law standards, particularly the requirement that preventive military action must be based on an “immediately imminent threat.” Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot urged that the Iranian population should not bear the burden of their government’s decisions and expressed regret that diplomatic avenues had thus far failed to prevent conflict.

The unfolding events on Saturday have drawn intense global focus, with major powers united in their call for restraint even as they acknowledge the real danger of a wider regional war. The US and Israel’s coordinated strikes, Iran’s missile retaliation, and the involvement of Gulf states hosting American forces have collectively heightened fears of a protracted conflict that could have far-reaching implications. Experts warn that ongoing violence could disrupt global energy supplies and destabilize international trade routes, potentially triggering economic repercussions well beyond the Middle East.

Diplomatic circles worldwide are pushing for renewed negotiations and emergency discussions at the United Nations to prevent further civilian casualties and regional destabilization. As the Middle East braces for what may come next, Beijing and Moscow have emerged as leading advocates for dialogue, while Europe, the Gulf states, and South Asia highlight the critical need to protect civilians and uphold international legal norms. The coming days will serve as a crucial test of the international community’s ability to manage and contain a crisis that could redefine regional security dynamics for years ahead.
