Nvidia Invests $2 Billion in Marvell to Boost AI Chip Integration

Nvidia has committed $2 billion to Marvell Technology to streamline the integration of custom artificial intelligence chips designed by Marvell with Nvidia’s networking equipment and central processors. This strategic investment aims to simplify customer access to these advanced AI solutions. Following the announcement, Marvell’s stock surged approximately 7% on Tuesday, while Nvidia’s shares increased by 2.7%.

In a significant development, Nvidia seeks to solidify its role in fulfilling the escalating computational demands driven by AI applications, especially as some companies shift towards custom processors as alternatives to Nvidia’s higher-priced options. Jacob Bourne, an analyst at EMarketer, highlighted that Nvidia will gain access to Marvell’s semi-custom silicon and cutting-edge optical interconnect technologies, which are crucial for scaling AI systems in data centers where bandwidth and power efficiency present major challenges.

Moreover, this collaboration expands Nvidia’s ecosystem to incorporate more specialized silicon, enabling the company to remain a pivotal access point for a growing variety of AI workloads. Bourne noted that investors are likely to view this partnership as a way to reduce operational friction by allowing AI chips from other manufacturers to function within Nvidia-dominated data centers. This approach helps Nvidia maintain its leadership position while broadening the AI semiconductor market’s scope and utility.

The two companies will jointly develop advanced networking solutions tailored for AI, focusing on optical interconnects and silicon photonics technology, which facilitate high-speed and energy-efficient data transmission. Marvell will provide custom chips and networking products compatible with Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology. Meanwhile, Nvidia will supply complementary components, including central processing units, network interface cards, and interconnects.

Notably, major technology firms such as Alphabet and Meta are projected to invest at least $630 billion this year to build AI infrastructure, driving up demand for chips used in servers and networking equipment. This trend is expected to benefit companies like Marvell significantly. Marvell has projected its revenue to grow by nearly 40%, approaching $15 billion by fiscal year 2028.
