In a significant gesture of appreciation for the bravery and dedication of Pakistan’s military personnel, President Asif Ali Zardari has formally approved the conferment of military awards to 1,989 members of the armed forces. This announcement was made public on Monday, coinciding with the celebrations of Pakistan Day, a national occasion that honors the country’s sovereignty and the sacrifices of its defenders.

The awards were granted under the provisions of Article 259(2) of the Constitution of Pakistan, which empowers the President to bestow military honours. This move reflects the highest level of recognition for the men and women who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and courage in service to the nation. The President’s Secretariat confirmed that the decision was taken following a recommendation by the Prime Minister, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the country’s leadership to acknowledge the armed forces’ vital role.

These honours cover a wide range of awards, each symbolizing different aspects of military excellence and dedication. Among the highest distinctions, 23 Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and 100 Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) medals were awarded to senior officers who have shown distinguished service and leadership. These awards are reserved for those whose contributions have significantly enhanced the operational capabilities and morale of the armed forces.

In addition to recognizing leadership, the President approved awards for acts of gallantry and bravery. Eleven Sitara-i-Basalat and 475 Tamgha-i-Basalat medals were granted to personnel who displayed courage in the face of danger. These medals honor individual acts of valor that go beyond the call of duty, often in challenging and life-threatening situations. Furthermore, 136 Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military) and 130 Imtiazi Sanad were also awarded, further acknowledging meritorious service and dedication.

The recognition extends beyond frontline heroism to include long-term service and commitment. The President sanctioned 175 Tamgha-i-Khidmat (Military) Class-I, 319 Class-II, and 620 Class-III awards, which are designed to honor sustained meritorious service across various ranks and roles within the armed forces. This inclusive approach ensures that not only the high-ranking officers but also the rank-and-file personnel receive due acknowledgment for their contributions to Pakistan’s national security.

This comprehensive list of awards reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to honoring the sacrifices and achievements of Pakistan’s military personnel. It also serves as a morale booster for the armed forces, reinforcing the importance of their role in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and maintaining peace and stability. The announcement on Pakistan Day adds symbolic weight to the honours, linking the recognition of individual and collective military efforts to the broader narrative of national pride and resilience.
