London Ambulances Torched in Antisemitic Attack, PM Denounces Incident

In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through London’s Jewish community, four ambulances operated by a Jewish volunteer emergency service were deliberately set ablaze in north London on Monday. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as a “deeply shocking antisemitic arson,” emphasizing the grave nature of the crime and its impact on community safety.

The London Fire Brigade responded swiftly to the emergency, dispatching six fire engines and approximately 40 firefighters to the scene to bring the blaze under control. The fire caused multiple gas cylinders inside the ambulances to explode, resulting in shattered windows in the surrounding area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident, and authorities have yet to make any arrests.

Officials confirmed that the attack occurred near a synagogue in the Golders Green neighborhood, a location with a significant Jewish population. Security camera footage captured three individuals wearing hooded jackets approaching the ambulances shortly before the fire broke out, providing crucial evidence for investigators. While the police are treating the case as an antisemitic hate crime, they have not classified it as an act of terrorism at this stage. Nevertheless, counter-terrorism units are leading the investigation due to the serious and targeted nature of the attack.

Authorities have also addressed circulating online claims about who might be responsible, stating that these assertions have not yet been verified. This cautious approach highlights the ongoing efforts to gather accurate information amid heightened tensions.

The Israeli embassy in London issued a strong condemnation of the attack, warning that a “climate of intimidation” against Jewish communities must be urgently addressed. The embassy’s statement underscored that “silence and inaction are no longer an option,” calling on authorities to implement decisive measures to protect vulnerable groups.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan joined the chorus of condemnation, announcing that police patrols in the affected area would be increased to reassure residents and deter further violence. Prime Minister Starmer expressed his solidarity with the Jewish community, stating, “My thoughts are with the Jewish community waking up to this horrific news,” and reaffirming that antisemitism has no place in British society.

The ambulances targeted in the attack belong to Hatzola, a volunteer emergency medical service that works closely with the UK’s National Health Service to provide rapid medical assistance. Despite the damage, Hatzola has pledged to continue its vital services uninterrupted. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting also confirmed that the government would replace the destroyed vehicles, ensuring that emergency response capabilities remain intact.

This incident comes amid a troubling global increase in attacks against Jewish communities, particularly since the Hamas assault on Israel in 2023 and the ongoing conflicts in the region. Experts and officials have warned that the volatile geopolitical situation, including tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, could exacerbate risks to community safety both in the UK and internationally.

As investigations continue, the attack has reignited urgent discussions about the need for stronger protections against hate crimes and the importance of fostering tolerance and security for all communities in London and beyond.
