Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in a significant telephone conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, highlighting the pressing need for joint efforts aimed at reducing tensions and fostering dialogue in the volatile Middle East region. This discussion took place against the backdrop of an escalating conflict that has now stretched into its fourth consecutive week, raising concerns about regional stability and security.

The conflict, which erupted on February 28, began with coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian interests. These attacks culminated in the assassination of Iran’s then-supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an event that has further intensified hostilities and complicated diplomatic relations across the Gulf. The ongoing violence has not only destabilized the region but also heightened fears of a broader confrontation involving multiple neighboring countries.

During the call, the Prime Minister expressed deep apprehension regarding the dangerous escalation of hostilities in the Gulf area. He underscored the critical importance of collective responsibility among regional players to de-escalate the situation promptly. Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the only viable path forward lies in returning to dialogue and diplomatic engagement, urging all neighboring nations to set aside their differences and work towards peaceful resolution.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister stressed the vital role of unity within the Muslim Ummah, describing it as more essential now than ever before. He conveyed that solidarity among Muslim nations is crucial in overcoming the current crisis and preventing further bloodshed. In this context, Shehbaz Sharif shared details of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region, reassuring the Iranian leadership of Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive and facilitative role.

As a close and brotherly neighbor to Iran, Pakistan’s Prime Minister also extended heartfelt condolences for the loss of innocent lives and expressed prayers for the swift recovery of those injured or displaced due to the conflict. He conveyed Pakistan’s unwavering support and solidarity with the resilient Iranian people during these challenging times. The call also included warm Eid ul Fitr and Nowruz greetings, which were reciprocated with equal warmth by President Pezeshkian, who wished well for the people of Pakistan.

This high-level exchange reflects Pakistan’s broader foreign policy approach of encouraging peaceful dialogue and regional cooperation to address conflicts. By advocating for de-escalation and emphasizing diplomatic channels, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as a responsible neighbor committed to fostering harmony and stability in the Middle East.
