PM Shehbaz Sharif Discusses Gulf Tensions in Call with Iran’s President

In a significant diplomatic exchange, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in a detailed telephone conversation with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday. The discussion, facilitated by the Prime Minister’s Office, underscored the close and brotherly ties between Pakistan and Iran, two neighboring countries with deep historical and cultural connections. During the call, PM Shehbaz extended warm greetings on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr and Nowruz, reflecting the shared cultural and religious values that bind the peoples of both nations.

President Pezeshkian responded with heartfelt appreciation, reciprocating the greetings and conveying his best wishes to the people of Pakistan. This exchange of goodwill highlighted the mutual respect and friendship that continue to shape bilateral relations. The Prime Minister took the opportunity to express Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the Iranian people, particularly in light of the ongoing hostilities affecting the Gulf region. He conveyed his profound condolences for the tragic loss of lives and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured or displaced by the conflict.

Turning to the broader regional situation, PM Shehbaz Sharif voiced serious concerns about the escalating tensions in the Gulf, which have raised alarm across neighboring states and the international community alike. He emphasized the urgent necessity for all parties involved to pursue de-escalation measures and to return to dialogue and diplomatic engagement. The Prime Minister stressed that resolving differences through peaceful means is critical to ensuring stability and security in this strategically vital region.

Furthermore, Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the importance of unity within the Muslim Ummah, noting that solidarity among Islamic nations is more crucial now than ever before. He shared insights into Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at fostering peace and reducing conflict in the region. Assuring the Iranian leadership of Pakistan’s commitment, the Prime Minister reiterated that Islamabad will continue to play a constructive and proactive role in facilitating dialogue and reconciliation among Gulf countries.

Meanwhile, developments on the international front added a new dimension to the situation. On the same day, former US President Donald Trump announced that he had called off his previously threatened military strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. This decision followed what he described as “very good and productive talks” with Tehran, signaling a potential thaw in hostilities. Trump’s announcement came just hours before the expiration of a two-day ultimatum during which he had warned of severe consequences if Iran did not reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

In a surprising shift from his earlier stance, Trump revealed that diplomatic discussions were underway and would continue throughout the week. He emphasized the progress made in conversations aimed at achieving a comprehensive resolution to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This unexpected development has been viewed by many as a hopeful sign that dialogue may prevail over confrontation, aligning with the calls for peace expressed by regional leaders like PM Shehbaz Sharif.
