PM Shehbaz Sharif Orders Ban on High-Octane Fuel in Government Vehicles to Cut Costs

In a decisive move to tighten government spending, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced an immediate ban on the use of high-octane fuel in all official government vehicles across Pakistan. This directive is part of a broader strategy aimed at curbing unnecessary expenditures and promoting fiscal discipline within public sector operations.

The ban follows a recent increase in the petroleum levy on high-octane fuel, reflecting the government’s efforts to manage the rising costs associated with fuel consumption. Under the new policy, any government official requiring high-octane fuel for operational purposes will now be responsible for covering the expenses personally, rather than charging them to the state.

All federal ministries, departments, authorities, and their subordinate organizations have been instructed to comply with this order without delay. The government emphasized that this step is crucial to ensure the prudent and transparent use of national resources, particularly in a time when economic challenges demand stringent financial management.

This latest directive builds upon previously implemented austerity measures, which included a significant 50 percent reduction in fuel usage by official vehicles and the grounding of 60 percent of the government fleet. These measures collectively aim to generate substantial savings that can be redirected to provide relief to the general public and help stabilize fuel prices in the market.

Prime Minister Sharif underscored the importance of strict adherence to these austerity policies, highlighting that minimizing avoidable expenses is essential for reducing the overall financial burden on the government. He stressed that such steps are necessary to ensure that taxpayers’ money is utilized more effectively and responsibly.

To guarantee compliance, authorities have been tasked with establishing robust monitoring systems. These will include stringent oversight mechanisms to detect any violations of the fuel usage ban, with legal actions to be pursued against those found disregarding the rules. The government’s commitment to enforcing these measures reflects its broader goal of fostering accountability and fiscal prudence within public institutions.
