Air Canada Express Jet Collides with Emergency Vehicle at LaGuardia, Several Hurt

Late Sunday night, an Air Canada Express regional jet experienced a serious collision with a ground vehicle while attempting to land at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The incident caused a temporary shutdown of the airport, disrupting operations during a typically busy evening period. Flight tracking data and eyewitness accounts confirm the aircraft, a CRJ-900, was arriving from Montreal when the crash occurred.

The jet struck a fire truck that was being operated by police personnel on the runway. Flight data from Flightradar24 indicates the plane was traveling at approximately 24 miles per hour (39 kilometers per hour) at the moment of impact. The last recorded position of the aircraft was at 11:37 PM Eastern Time (03:37 GMT on Monday). The collision caused visible damage to the nose of the plane, which was photographed at the scene showing the aircraft’s front end noticeably tilted upwards.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the site, attending to those injured in the crash. Four individuals sustained injuries, including the pilot and copilot of the aircraft, both of whom were reported to be seriously hurt. Additionally, a police sergeant and an officer operating the fire truck suffered broken limbs. All four victims were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where they remain in stable condition following medical treatment.

In the immediate aftermath, airport authorities halted all operations to allow emergency crews to clear the damaged aircraft from the runway and conduct thorough safety inspections. This pause in activity was essential to ensure the runway was safe for subsequent flights and to prevent further incidents. Investigations into the exact cause of the collision are ongoing, with officials examining coordination protocols between air traffic control, emergency response teams, and ground operations.

As of now, Air Canada Express has not issued an official statement regarding the accident. LaGuardia Airport officials are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses. This event highlights the complexities and critical importance of seamless communication and coordination among various airport departments, especially during peak operational hours when the risk of accidents can increase.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by major airports in managing simultaneous aircraft movements and emergency services on the ground. Authorities are likely to review existing safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and ground personnel alike.
