Romania Presents First-Ever Choral Version of Pakistan’s National Anthem on Pakistan Day

In a remarkable cultural milestone commemorating Pakistan Day, the Embassy of Romania in Islamabad introduced the world’s inaugural choral arrangement and professionally crafted choral score of Pakistan’s national anthem, the Qaumi Tarāna. This unprecedented musical project not only celebrates the anthem’s deep-rooted significance but also highlights the blossoming cultural relationship between Pakistan and Romania.

The initiative was brought to life by Romania’s esteemed National Chamber Choir, known as “Madrigal – Marin Constantin.” This renowned choir has a long-standing reputation for excellence and innovation in vocal music. Their adaptation of the Qaumi Tarāna offers a fresh perspective by transforming the anthem, originally composed for a full orchestra, into a polyphonic choral masterpiece. The arrangement carefully distributes the melody and harmonies across soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices, ensuring the anthem’s solemn tone and intricate musicality remain intact while introducing a new dimension of vocal harmony.

As part of the choir’s broader cultural project titled Diplomacy – The Anthems of the World, this rendition of Pakistan’s national anthem stands out for its artistic complexity and reverence. The Qaumi Tarāna was composed in 1949 by Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla, with its poetic lyrics penned by the celebrated Urdu poet Hafeez Jalandhari in 1952. The anthem was first aired on Radio Pakistan on August 13, 1954, and its initial multi-voice recording was performed by a group of eleven distinguished Pakistani vocalists in 1955. This new choral version builds upon that rich legacy, offering a refined and expressive interpretation that brings out the anthem’s emotional depth and patriotic spirit.

Adapting the anthem from its original orchestral form to a choral format posed considerable challenges. The composition features 38 distinct musical tones played across 21 different instruments, with continuously evolving phrases that avoid repetition. Moreover, the anthem’s highly Persianized Urdu lyrics demanded precise articulation and synchronized pronunciation among choir members. Through painstaking rehearsal and expert musical arrangement, the Madrigal Choir succeeded in converting these complex orchestral elements into harmonious vocal lines, creating a performance that honors the anthem’s original integrity while showcasing the power of collective choral expression.

Romania’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Dan Stoenescu, hailed the project as a historic accomplishment, emphasizing that this is the first time Pakistan has received a dedicated choral score for its national anthem. He underscored the importance of cultural exchange and music as vital tools for fostering mutual understanding and friendship between nations. The ambassador highlighted that this initiative exemplifies how artistic collaboration can transcend borders and celebrate shared values of respect, unity, and artistic excellence.

In a formal ceremony marking the launch, Ambassador Stoenescu presented the official album and choral score to several of Pakistan’s highest-ranking officials. Among the dignitaries were President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir. This ceremonial handover symbolized the spirit of friendship and cultural dialogue that continues to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Romania and Pakistan.

Established in 1963 by the legendary conductor Marin Constantin, the Madrigal – Marin Constantin National Chamber Choir has earned international acclaim for its unique non-vibrato singing style, innovative stereophonic stage arrangements, and compelling performances. Over the decades, the choir has delivered thousands of concerts worldwide and garnered numerous prestigious awards, solidifying its status as a beacon of musical excellence and cultural diplomacy.

Through this artistic tribute, Romania reaffirms its profound respect for Pakistan’s history, identity, and national values. The choral rendition of the Qaumi Tarāna stands as a testament to the power of music and culture in bridging nations and fostering deeper connections beyond politics and diplomacy. This collaboration not only enriches Pakistan’s cultural heritage but also strengthens the enduring friendship between the two countries.
