New Fire Breaks Out at Karachi’s Gul Plaza Two Months After Deadly Blaze

In a distressing development for Karachi residents, a new fire has broken out at the Gul Plaza shopping complex, almost two months after the tragic inferno that resulted in the loss of more than 80 lives. The recent blaze originated within the already compromised structure of the mall, raising concerns about further damage to the building that has been under scrutiny since the initial disaster.

The fire reportedly started in a shop situated in a narrow alley connected to Gul Plaza, an area that has been a focal point for investigations into safety lapses. Thick plumes of smoke have been seen billowing from the affected shops, causing alarm among nearby shopkeepers and residents. Given the weakened state of the building after the previous fire, there are fears that this new incident may exacerbate structural vulnerabilities, potentially complicating future restoration or demolition efforts.

As news of the fire spread, a sizable crowd quickly gathered outside the mall, drawn by the smoke and the urgent activity of emergency responders. Rescue 1122 teams were promptly on the scene, spearheading firefighting operations to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent areas. Their swift response was critical in managing the situation, especially considering the high-risk environment due to the building’s damaged condition.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) immediately mobilized its resources to support firefighting efforts. Following a request from Rescue 1122, the KWSC CEO issued an emergency directive to activate the NIPA and Safoora hydrants, ensuring a steady and reliable water supply to combat the fire. Additionally, water tankers stationed at the Sakhi Hassan hydrant have been placed on standby, ready to provide supplementary support if required.

A spokesperson for the Water Corporation emphasized the importance of maintaining continuous water flow during such emergencies. The Hydrant Cell in-charge has been maintaining close coordination with rescue officials to guarantee that the firefighting teams have uninterrupted access to water until the fire is fully extinguished. This collaborative effort highlights the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in managing urban emergencies effectively.

This fresh fire incident at Gul Plaza serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in ensuring safety and structural integrity in Karachi’s commercial hubs. It also underscores the need for stringent safety protocols and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies in the future. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the new fire and assess the extent of damage to the already fragile building.
