Iran’s Mojtaba Khamenei Commends Pakistani Ties and Iranian Unity in Nowruz Address

On the eve of Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebrated across Iran and neighboring regions, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei released a significant written message reflecting on the past year’s challenges and the nation’s steadfastness. This communication, notable for being his first major public statement since assuming leadership on March 9 following the passing of his father, highlighted the resilience of the Iranian people amid a series of military and security crises. Unlike previous leaders who often addressed the nation through video or public speeches, Khamenei chose a written format, which has sparked speculation about his health status, though no official confirmation has been provided.

In his message, Khamenei recounted the turbulent events that shaped the past year, emphasizing three distinct military and security confrontations. He praised the Iranian populace for their decisive response to a coup attempt on 22 Dey, their unwavering opposition to what he described as global arrogance on 22 Bahman, and their impactful actions on 22 Esfand, coinciding with Quds Day, which sent a clear message to adversaries that Iran’s strength extends beyond conventional military capabilities such as missiles, drones, and torpedoes. These references underscore the Supreme Leader’s view of Iran’s strategic resilience and the population’s role in safeguarding national sovereignty.

Central to Khamenei’s address was the theme of unity. He stressed that despite the country’s diverse religious, intellectual, cultural, and political landscape, this cohesion has effectively weakened the enemy’s efforts to destabilize Iran. He described this solidarity as a “special blessing from God Almighty” and urged citizens to nurture and expand this unity as a vital source of national strength. This call for harmony comes at a time when Iran faces both internal pressures and external threats, making social cohesion a critical component of its stability.

Turning to foreign relations, Khamenei highlighted the importance of Iran’s ties with neighboring countries, with a particular emphasis on Pakistan. He referred to Pakistan as a “great country” and expressed Tehran’s commitment to fostering stronger economic and diplomatic connections in the year ahead. The Supreme Leader also paid tribute to his late father’s affection for Pakistan, recalling how the former leader had prayed for Pakistan during Friday prayers when the country was grappling with devastating floods. Khamenei reiterated his own deep respect and affection for Pakistan, assuring that these sentiments would be openly conveyed in various forums, signaling Tehran’s intention to maintain and deepen this bilateral relationship.

Addressing regional security concerns, Khamenei firmly denied Iranian involvement in any attacks on Turkey or Oman, countering narratives that seek to implicate Tehran in destabilizing activities beyond its borders. He accused Israel of orchestrating false-flag operations designed to sow discord among neighboring states and warned that such deceptive tactics could potentially be employed in other countries as well. This cautionary note reflects Tehran’s awareness of the complex and often covert dynamics shaping the Middle East’s geopolitical landscape.

The timing of this message is particularly significant as it coincides with the 21st day of ongoing hostilities involving the United States and Israel. Recent Israeli airstrikes reportedly resulted in the death of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman, while Iran’s South Pars gas production has been drastically reduced by half. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the previous US administration considered plans to seize Kharg Island, a strategic energy hub. In retaliation, Iran has launched strikes targeting energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, escalating tensions across the Gulf region.

Analysts interpret Khamenei’s Nowruz message as a clear signal of the new leader’s strategic priorities: emphasizing internal unity and economic resilience as foundational pillars in navigating the ongoing regional conflict. By underscoring solidarity at home and strengthening ties with neighbors like Pakistan, Tehran aims to project stability and resolve amid a volatile geopolitical environment. This address not only honors the spirit of Nowruz but also serves as a roadmap for Iran’s approach to the challenges ahead.
