ISLAMABAD: Pakistan took a significant leap forward in its technological journey on Thursday with the formal issuance of 5G spectrum licenses. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif described this development as a landmark achievement that will have far-reaching impacts across multiple sectors, including industry, agriculture, and information technology. The event marked a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its digital infrastructure and enhance connectivity nationwide.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister emphasized that the 5G spectrum auction had been conducted with utmost transparency and fairness, setting a new standard for such processes in the country. He extended his congratulations to Federal Minister for IT, Shiza Fatima Khawaja, her dedicated team, and the telecom operators who successfully secured the licenses, notably Jazz, Zong, and Ufone. This collaborative effort between the government and private sector players is expected to accelerate Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to technological advancement, Shahbaz Sharif stated that providing cutting-edge technology services to citizens across Pakistan remains a top priority. He underscored the potential of 5G technology to empower the nation’s youth by enabling them to harness advanced tools such as artificial intelligence, thereby elevating Pakistan’s stature in the global IT arena. This move is anticipated to open new avenues for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

In addition to domestic benefits, the Prime Minister also reflected on Pakistan’s strong bilateral relationship with China, noting that the adoption of modern telecommunications technology symbolizes the deep and unique friendship between the two countries. This partnership has played a crucial role in facilitating technological exchange and infrastructure development, which continues to benefit Pakistan’s digital landscape.

Federal Minister Shiza Fatima Khawaja remarked that the launch of 5G services represents a historic milestone as the first-ever introduction of this technology in Pakistan. She also mentioned ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing 4G network capabilities to ensure a smoother transition and better overall internet experience for users. The auction process, she added, was conducted with full transparency, and the quality of internet services across the country is expected to improve significantly in the upcoming months.

Maj-Gen (retd) Hafeez ur Rehman, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), provided a brief overview of the country’s mobile technology evolution, which began in the early 1990s. He noted that since 2004, Pakistan has held four spectrum auctions, and with the latest 5G auction, the country now leads the region in terms of spectrum capacity. This achievement positions Pakistan at the forefront of mobile technology development in South Asia.

The ceremony culminated with the formal signing of 5G spectrum licenses between the PTA and the telecom operators Jazz, Ufone, and Zong. With these licenses in hand, the companies are poised to commence the rollout of 5G services nationwide. This rollout promises to deliver faster internet speeds, introduce modern digital services, and provide a substantial boost to Pakistan’s burgeoning digital economy. The introduction of 5G is expected to revolutionize connectivity, enabling smarter cities, improved healthcare services, and more efficient agricultural practices through advanced technology.
