Lionel Messi Reaches 900 Career Goals as Inter Miami Exits CONCACAF Champions Cup

Argentine football legend Lionel Messi achieved a remarkable milestone on Wednesday by netting the 900th goal of his illustrious career. Despite this personal triumph, his team Inter Miami faced heartbreak as they were knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the last-16 stage. The match against Nashville SC ended in a 1-1 draw, but Miami’s exit was sealed on the away goals rule, bringing an end to their campaign in the regional club competition.

Messi, now 38 years old, wasted no time in making his mark on the game, scoring just seven minutes into the second leg to give Miami an early lead. His goal sparked hopes of a memorable night, especially since it was the club’s final match at their Chase Stadium home in Fort Lauderdale. However, Nashville’s Cristian Espinoza struck back in the 74th minute, leveling the aggregate score and ultimately securing Nashville’s progression to the quarter-finals by virtue of away goals.

This bittersweet evening highlighted both Messi’s enduring brilliance and the cruel nature of knockout football. The Argentine maestro’s milestone goal brought his tally for Inter Miami to 81 since joining the MLS side in 2023. Over the years, Messi has amassed an extraordinary goal record, having scored 672 goals for Barcelona, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, and 115 for the Argentina national team. His journey to 900 goals began more than two decades ago, with his first senior goal coming as a promising 17-year-old in a 2005 La Liga match against Albacete.

Widely hailed as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Messi still trails his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 965 career goals. Before the match, Inter Miami’s manager and former teammate Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s incredible scoring feat, describing it as “insane.” Mascherano reflected on the privilege of witnessing many of Messi’s goals up close, emphasizing the unique talent that sets him apart from all others in the sport.

Wednesday’s fixture also marked a poignant farewell to Chase Stadium, Inter Miami’s home since their MLS debut in 2020. The club is preparing to move into a new, state-of-the-art stadium with a 26,700-seat capacity next month, signaling a new chapter for the franchise. Messi, who has extended his contract with Miami through the 2028 season, is expected to continue playing a pivotal role for the team in the coming years.

Looking ahead, Messi is anticipated to participate in his sixth FIFA World Cup later this year, as Argentina aims to defend their title in the expanded tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Throughout his career, Messi’s goal-scoring prowess has been nothing short of extraordinary. His 672 goals for Barcelona came in just 778 appearances, contributing to 35 trophies during his time at the club. At Paris Saint-Germain, he added 32 goals in 75 games, helping secure three trophies including two league titles.

Since arriving in Miami, Messi has maintained his impressive scoring rate, netting 81 goals in 96 matches. His contributions were instrumental in Inter Miami’s victories in the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2025 MLS Cup. On the international stage, Messi has scored 115 goals in 196 appearances, including two crucial strikes in Argentina’s dramatic 2022 World Cup final win over France.

While Messi’s tally places him second only to Ronaldo in most official records, debates continue over the exact numbers for other legendary players like Brazil’s Pelé. Although Pelé is often credited with over 1,000 goals, many statisticians estimate his official total at 762 across his time with Brazil, Santos, and New York Cosmos. Nonetheless, Messi’s 900 goals stand as a testament to his exceptional skill, longevity, and consistency at the highest levels of football.
