On Tuesday, Aleema Khan publicly voiced deep apprehensions regarding the health and medical care of her husband, the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who also founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Speaking to the press at the DHA checkpoint in Rawalpindi, she described the gathering as the final iftar of Ramadan held in solidarity with Imran Khan, underscoring the family’s mounting anxiety over his deteriorating condition and the quality of treatment he is receiving while in custody.
She firmly rejected the official medical report submitted by government-appointed doctors, emphasizing that the family will not accept any medical assessments unless Imran Khan’s personal physician is allowed to be present during his treatment. Aleema criticized the report presented before the Supreme Court, accusing the authorities of hastily compiling it without due diligence or transparency. This, she argued, undermines the credibility of the findings and raises serious questions about the intentions behind his medical care.
Turning to the ongoing court proceedings, Aleema highlighted the critical questions posed by the Supreme Court bench regarding Imran Khan’s health and treatment. However, she expressed disappointment with the court’s response, particularly the Advocate General’s argument that transferring Imran to a hospital could potentially trigger law and order issues. She described this stance as disheartening and not reflective of the judiciary’s earlier inquiries, implying a disconnect between judicial concern and administrative action.
Aleema Khan warned that the former Prime Minister is being deliberately confined under conditions that could severely harm his eyesight and overall health. She condemned the authorities for what she termed a criminal neglect of his medical needs, stressing that keeping him imprisoned without proper care amounts to a grave injustice. She also pointed out that the Chief Commissioner, who oversees the jail administration, operates under the Interior Ministry, suggesting that accountability lies at the highest levels of government. Despite these challenges, Aleema affirmed that the family’s legal battle to secure adequate medical treatment for Imran Khan will continue unabated.
In addition, Aleema announced that a petition filed by Dr. Uzma concerning Imran Khan’s medical care would be withdrawn from the Supreme Court, but she reassured supporters that the fight for proper healthcare would persist through other legal avenues. She also touched on other ongoing legal matters, mentioning that the Chief Justice has scheduled proceedings for March 31 in the Al Qadir Trust case, while expressing cautious optimism about securing bail in the Toshakhana II case.
Addressing media conduct, Aleema Khan called out a prominent news channel for inaccurate reporting related to a meeting involving her and Sohail Afridi. She demanded a formal apology and criticized the practice of broadcasting stories based on anonymous sources, urging media outlets to uphold journalistic integrity and accountability in their coverage.
On regional developments, Aleema expressed sorrow over recent reports of civilian casualties in Afghanistan, including an alleged attack on a rehabilitation center. She reiterated Imran Khan’s long-standing stance advocating peace and dialogue as the only viable path forward. Aleema urged the Pakistani government to engage with Afghanistan through diplomatic negotiations rather than military confrontation, warning that continued conflict could escalate tensions further. She concluded her remarks with a call for restraint, transparency, and peaceful engagement both within Pakistan and across the region, emphasizing that dialogue remains the most effective solution to ongoing challenges.
