PM Shehbaz Emphasizes Expanding Affordable Housing Finance for Common Citizens

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for decisive and practical measures to ensure that housing finance facilities reach the common man effectively. During a high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad on Wednesday, he stressed the importance of making homeownership accessible, particularly for low-income segments of society. This initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to address Pakistan’s housing shortage and improve living standards for its citizens.

The Prime Minister chaired a comprehensive session focused on the Ministry of Housing and Works, where officials presented a strategic roadmap aimed at boosting the housing sector. Shehbaz Sharif underscored that providing affordable housing solutions, encouraging private sector participation, and upgrading public amenities remain top priorities for his administration. He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to create sustainable housing projects that can cater to the growing population’s needs.

During the meeting, detailed updates were shared regarding ongoing reforms in the construction sector’s tax framework. These reforms are designed to streamline taxation and promote investment in housing development. Discussions are actively underway between the Federal Board of Revenue and provincial authorities to harmonize tax policies, which is expected to create a more conducive environment for builders and developers nationwide.

Another significant aspect of the meeting was the formulation of a policy aimed at constructing homes for low-income groups through public-private partnerships. This approach is intended to leverage private sector efficiency and resources while ensuring government oversight and support. The Prime Minister emphasized that such collaborations are essential to accelerate housing delivery and make affordable homes a reality for many families.

Furthermore, the government plans to establish a Real Estate Regulatory Authority to oversee the real estate and housing sectors. This body will be responsible for implementing rules and regulations to protect consumers, enhance transparency, and promote fair practices within the market. The creation of this authority is expected to instill greater confidence among investors and homebuyers alike.

On the financial front, the Ministry of Housing is coordinating closely with the Ministry of Finance, the Federal Board of Revenue, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and provincial governments to develop the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) framework. This initiative aims to provide innovative financing options for housing projects, making it easier for individuals to access home loans and investment opportunities in real estate.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives reflect a clear commitment to tackling Pakistan’s housing challenges through integrated policy reforms and multi-stakeholder cooperation. The government’s focus on affordable housing finance and regulatory improvements signals a proactive approach to ensuring that the dream of owning a home becomes attainable for a larger segment of the population in the near future.
