In a coordinated drive involving the district administration and the Provincial Transport Authority, officials have targeted transporters who were charging passengers exorbitant rates for journeys to their hometowns. This crackdown aims to ensure that citizens can travel affordably and without exploitation during the busy holiday season.
In the most recent phase of this operation, authorities conducted thorough inspections of 546 buses operating across the city. These inspections uncovered widespread instances of overcharging, prompting immediate refunds totaling Rs 718,000 to affected passengers. This swift action reflects the administration’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and maintaining fair transport practices amid the heightened demand for travel.
Since the launch of the campaign four days ago, a total of 1,442 buses have been scrutinized, resulting in the recovery and reimbursement of Rs 1.746 million in excess fares. Officials continue to monitor bus depots and terminals, particularly focusing on key transit points such as the Superhighway, Malir, and District Central areas, where inter-city and inter-provincial buses frequently operate.
Ameet Narwani, Secretary of the Provincial Transport Authority, formally presented a detailed report on the crackdown to Karachi’s Commissioner.
