Nehal Hashmi Takes Oath as Sindh Governor, Replacing Kamran Tessori

On Friday, Nehal Hashmi, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), officially assumed the office of Sindh governor, succeeding Kamran Khan Tessori from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P). The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Governor House in Karachi, where Sindh High Court Chief Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput administered the formal pledge. This transition marks a significant political development in the province, reflecting the federal government’s recent decisions.

The event was attended by several prominent figures from Sindh’s political landscape, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. Alongside them were Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar and other key provincial ministers, underscoring the importance of the occasion. PML-N’s Sindh president Bashir Memon, accompanied by numerous party leaders and workers, was also present to witness Hashmi’s induction, highlighting the party’s strengthened presence in the province.

This appointment came shortly after President Asif Ali Zardari gave his formal approval for Hashmi’s elevation to the gubernatorial post, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The prime minister had earlier forwarded a summary recommending Hashmi’s name for the position, signaling a strategic move by the federal government to place a trusted PML-N figure in Sindh’s highest ceremonial office. Prior to the oath-taking, PM Shehbaz Sharif met with Hashmi in Islamabad, personally congratulating him on his new role and expressing confidence in his leadership.

Meanwhile, Kamran Khan Tessori, the outgoing governor from MQM-P, departed for Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, planning to remain there for several days. Before leaving, Tessori expressed gratitude towards the protocol staff and officials who gathered at the airport to bid him farewell. However, the MQM-P voiced dissatisfaction over the federal government’s decision, stating that the party was not consulted beforehand. A spokesperson for MQM-P indicated that the party would soon deliberate internally to decide on its future course of action in response to this development.

Nehal Hashmi, originally from Karachi’s Malir area, has long been a dedicated member of the PML-N. His political career includes serving as an adviser on law and justice to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif between 1997 and 1999. In 2012, he took on the role of president of the PML-N’s Karachi chapter, and two years later, in August 2014, he was appointed as the general secretary of the party’s Sindh chapter. A lawyer by profession, Hashmi’s active involvement in party affairs led to his election as a PML-N Senate candidate from Punjab in 2015. Despite a suspension of his party membership in 2017, he was reinstated in 2021, reaffirming his standing within the party ranks.

This change in Sindh’s gubernatorial office comes at a time when political dynamics in the province remain complex and fluid. The federal government’s decision to install a PML-N leader in the post is seen as an effort to consolidate influence in Sindh, traditionally a stronghold of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and MQM factions. As Nehal Hashmi begins his tenure, all eyes will be on how he navigates the province’s intricate political environment and works alongside provincial leadership to address ongoing challenges.
