Security Forces Neutralize Five Terrorists in Lakki Marwat Amid Rising Cross-Border Threats

In a decisive counterterrorism operation carried out in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistani security forces successfully eliminated five terrorists linked to India-backed militant networks. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released a statement on Sunday confirming the operation, which took place on March 15 following intelligence reports about the presence of hostile elements in the area.

The military’s media wing detailed that the operation involved a swift and intense engagement with the militants, described as “khawarij,” a term used to denote extremist insurgents. After a fierce exchange of fire, the security personnel managed to neutralize all five terrorists, significantly disrupting their operational capabilities in the region. The forces also seized a cache of weapons and ammunition from the deceased militants, who were reportedly involved in multiple terror-related activities within Lakki Marwat and its surroundings.

Following the initial clearance, security agencies launched a thorough sanitization sweep to ensure no other hostile elements remained hidden in the vicinity. This follow-up phase is part of a broader counterterrorism strategy under Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, which aims to eradicate foreign-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan’s soil. The ISPR reaffirmed the military’s commitment to maintaining relentless pressure on terrorist groups to safeguard national security and stability.

It is important to note that since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has witnessed a marked increase in cross-border terrorist incidents, especially in provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which share porous borders with Afghanistan. This surge in militant activity has prompted Pakistan to intensify its military operations along the frontier regions to prevent infiltration and attacks.

In response to the escalating threat, Pakistan launched “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” a comprehensive offensive targeting Afghan Taliban operatives and their allied militants. This campaign has resulted in the elimination of approximately 684 militants and injuries to over 900 others. Additionally, Pakistani forces have destroyed 252 militant checkposts, significantly degrading the operational infrastructure of these groups. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar recently highlighted these figures, underscoring the government’s resolve to combat terrorism.

The strained security situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border reached a critical point in October 2025, when clashes erupted following unprovoked attacks by Afghan Taliban and allied militants on Pakistani border posts. These confrontations led to the deaths of over 200 militants and the martyrdom of 23 Pakistani soldiers, who valiantly defended the country’s territorial integrity. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts and rounds of talks, a lasting agreement has remained elusive, primarily due to the Afghan Taliban regime’s unwillingness to take decisive action against terrorist factions operating from their territory.

As the security forces continue their vigilant operations in Lakki Marwat and other vulnerable regions, the government and military remain steadfast in their mission to eliminate all forms of terrorism, particularly those fueled by foreign interference. The recent success in Lakki Marwat serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges Pakistan faces in securing its borders and protecting its citizens from the persistent threat of militancy.
