Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has entrusted the Intelligence Bureau (IB) with the critical responsibility of overseeing the enforcement of the national austerity plan throughout all government institutions. This directive was formalized through a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Monday, which outlined the IB’s role in conducting a thorough audit and validation process. The bureau is tasked not only with verifying compliance but also with assessing the overall impact of the fuel conservation efforts and additional austerity measures implemented by the government.
the notification, the Intelligence Bureau will be required to provide weekly updates on the progress and effectiveness of these austerity initiatives. These reports will be submitted directly to the Prime Minister as well as to the Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures, ensuring continuous oversight and accountability at the highest levels of government.
This move comes in the wake of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement of a comprehensive austerity and savings plan aimed at mitigating the economic pressures caused by escalating fuel prices. The surge in energy costs has been largely attributed to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In a nationally televised address on March 9, the Prime Minister outlined the government’s strategy to manage the crisis by adopting stringent economic and administrative reforms.
During his speech, PM Shehbaz emphasized the necessity for both federal and provincial governments to embrace austerity and simplicity in their operations. The measures introduced include cutting down government expenditures, reducing the official working week to four days, and limiting non-essential travel. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced that federal cabinet members, advisers, and special assistants would voluntarily forgo their salaries for two months, while members of parliament would accept a 25% reduction in their pay during the same period. These steps are intended to set an example and demonstrate the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline amid challenging economic circumstances.
In a related development, the Intelligence Bureau has also been instructed to closely monitor the implementation of austerity protocols within the secretariats of the National Assembly and Senate. Authorities have made it clear that any officials found violating the fuel conservation or austerity guidelines will face immediate disciplinary action. This strict enforcement approach underscores the government’s determination to ensure that the austerity measures are observed uniformly across all branches of government.
The decision to assign the IB as the watchdog for this initiative followed a high-level review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During this session, the Prime Minister reiterated that achieving economic stability and providing relief to the public remain the government’s foremost priorities. He highlighted that the administration is taking all necessary steps not only to offer immediate assistance but also to secure long-term economic resilience in the face of ongoing global uncertainties.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister directed petroleum distribution companies to strictly adhere to government-set prices for fuel products and maintain full transparency in their operations. He assured that consultations are underway to explore additional measures aimed at easing the burden on consumers. Thanks to timely government interventions, an adequate supply of petroleum products is currently available within the country, which is crucial for stabilizing the market and preventing price gouging.
During the meeting, officials provided a detailed briefing on the nation’s existing oil reserves, ongoing imports of petroleum products, and strategies to ensure uninterrupted supply. The government is actively monitoring fuel sales to guarantee that petroleum products are sold at the fixed prices, thereby protecting consumers from unfair practices during this sensitive period.
In a bid to enhance public participation and oversight, a new feature has been integrated into the Pak App, allowing consumers to report issues such as fuel shortages or instances of fuel being sold above the government-mandated prices anywhere in Pakistan. This digital tool empowers citizens to directly alert authorities, who are then expected to take swift corrective action.
The participants of the review meeting expressed strong support for the Prime Minister’s recent decision to hold petroleum prices steady, a move welcomed by many as a relief measure amid rising inflation. The meeting was attended by key cabinet members including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, reflecting the high level of government commitment to managing the economic challenges effectively.
