Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has entrusted the Intelligence Bureau (IB) with the critical responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the national austerity plan throughout various government institutions. This directive, formalized through a Cabinet Division notification released on Monday, mandates the IB to carry out a thorough audit and validation process. This includes assessing the impact of all fuel conservation initiatives and additional austerity measures introduced by the government.
The notification further specifies that the Intelligence Bureau is required to submit detailed weekly progress reports not only to the Prime Minister but also to the Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures. This move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring strict adherence to the austerity protocols amid the ongoing economic challenges.
The austerity plan was unveiled by PM Shehbaz Sharif in response to the escalating fuel prices, a consequence of the volatile geopolitical situation in the Middle East involving the US, Israel, and Iran. In a nationally televised address on March 9, the Prime Minister outlined the government’s strategy to mitigate the economic fallout from the energy crisis. He emphasized that difficult yet necessary economic and administrative decisions had been taken to safeguard the country’s financial stability and to ease the burden on the public.
Among the key measures announced were significant cuts in government spending, a reduction of the official working week to four days, and restrictions on non-essential travel. Additionally, the Prime Minister declared that federal cabinet members, advisers, and special assistants would voluntarily forgo their salaries for the upcoming two months. Members of parliament were also instructed to accept a 25 percent salary reduction during this period, reflecting a collective effort to lead by example in times of economic hardship.
In a related development, the Intelligence Bureau has been tasked with monitoring the implementation of austerity measures within the National Assembly and Senate secretariats as well. Authorities have made it clear that any government officials found violating the austerity or fuel conservation directives will face immediate disciplinary action. This strict enforcement policy aims to ensure that the austerity plan is uniformly applied across all levels of government.
The decision to assign the IB as the watchdog came shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level review meeting focused on the enforcement of austerity and fuel conservation efforts. During this meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated that maintaining economic stability and providing relief to the public remain the government’s foremost priorities. He stressed that the measures being implemented are designed not only to address immediate challenges but also to secure long-term economic resilience.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister directed petroleum distribution companies to adhere strictly to government-fixed prices for fuel and to maintain full transparency in their operations. He assured participants that consultations were ongoing to explore additional steps that could further alleviate the public’s difficulties. The government’s timely decisions have ensured an adequate supply of petroleum products within the country, which is crucial in the current global climate of uncertainty.
During the meeting, officials provided a comprehensive briefing on Pakistan’s existing oil reserves, current imports of petroleum products, and strategies to meet domestic demand effectively. The government is actively monitoring fuel sales to guarantee that prices remain fixed and supplies uninterrupted, thereby preventing any exploitation during this sensitive period.
In an innovative step to enhance public participation, a new feature has been integrated into the Pak App, allowing consumers to report issues such as fuel shortages or instances where fuel is being sold above the government-mandated prices. This digital tool empowers citizens to directly alert authorities, who are then expected to take swift corrective action.
The participants at the meeting also expressed their support for the Prime Minister’s recent decision to refrain from increasing petroleum prices, a move welcomed by many as a relief to consumers. The meeting was attended by key cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, reflecting the high-level coordination behind these austerity efforts.
