Sindh Government Sanctions Rs50 Billion for Major Civil Hospital Karachi Upgrade

The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, has given his in-principle approval to an ambitious Rs100 billion master plan aimed at transforming Civil Hospital Karachi into a state-of-the-art healthcare institution. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the provincial government’s efforts to enhance the medical infrastructure of Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan. During a high-level meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House, Murad Ali Shah also sanctioned a substantial Rs50 billion grant from the Sindh government to kickstart the project immediately.

The redevelopment plan focuses on expanding the hospital’s capacity and modernizing its facilities while maintaining the historical essence of one of Karachi’s oldest medical institutions. Civil Hospital Karachi currently accommodates 2,142 beds, but with the proposed expansion, an additional 500 beds will be introduced to meet the growing healthcare demands of the city’s population. This increase in capacity is expected to significantly improve patient care and reduce overcrowding, which has been a persistent challenge.

Central to the project is the construction of the Abdul Sattar Edhi Medical Tower, which will serve as a modern vertical structure replacing several outdated and deteriorating buildings on the hospital campus. The new tower will house specialized departments including a surgical ward, outpatient department (OPD), burns ward, and a jail ward, among others. The plan also includes the development of a modern mortuary, advanced waste management systems, and administrative blocks to streamline hospital operations. Additionally, specialized hostels for nurses and doctors will be constructed to provide on-site accommodation, thereby supporting hospital staff and improving service delivery.

In an effort to address logistical challenges, the master plan proposes widening key roads surrounding the hospital, specifically Yakoob Khan Road and Bezanji Road. This infrastructural improvement aims to alleviate traffic congestion, ensuring faster ambulance access and smoother patient transportation to and from the hospital. Such measures are crucial in emergency situations where every minute counts.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized the importance of preserving the hospital’s heritage throughout the redevelopment process. He assured that the historical buildings would be carefully restored and protected, blending the old with the new. This approach reflects a commitment to honoring the hospital’s legacy while ushering in modern healthcare advancements. To oversee the execution of this extensive project, a board comprising experts from both the public and private sectors will be established. This board will be responsible for monitoring progress and ensuring timely completion of various phases.

The approval of this master plan is expected to bring a transformative change to Civil Hospital Karachi, positioning it as a leading medical facility in the region. It also reflects the Sindh government’s broader strategy to upgrade healthcare infrastructure across the province, addressing the needs of a rapidly growing urban population. With the project now officially underway, stakeholders remain hopeful that the enhanced facilities will significantly improve healthcare outcomes for Karachi’s residents in the coming years.
