Islamabad Resident Seeks Court Order for Early Eid Moon Sighting Announcement to Ease Public Strain

ISLAMABAD: In an uncommon legal move, a resident of Islamabad has submitted a petition to the Islamabad High Court requesting that the announcement of the Eid ul Fitr moon sighting be made earlier than usual. The petitioner emphasized that a timely declaration would help alleviate public inconvenience and mitigate potential law and order challenges frequently observed during this festive period.

The petition was lodged by Abdullah Shafiq Jan, an Islamabad local, who approached the court in his individual capacity. In his plea, he urged the judiciary to instruct the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to expedite the official announcement once the crescent moon confirming the arrival of Eid is sighted. This request stems from concerns over the delays that have become a recurring issue in recent years.

Abdullah Shafiq Jan highlighted that the customary postponement in declaring the moon sighting often results in many people beginning Taraweeh prayers prematurely, before the official confirmation is made public. This practice, he argued, leads to widespread confusion among the general populace, as different groups follow varying schedules for Eid preparations. The lack of a uniform announcement disrupts social harmony and complicates religious observances.

Moreover, the petitioner pointed out that the late-night announcements tend to cause a sudden and overwhelming rush of shoppers to markets, eager to complete their Eid purchases at the last moment. This surge not only creates overcrowded commercial areas but also poses significant challenges for law enforcement and municipal authorities tasked with crowd management. The resulting congestion can escalate tensions and increase the risk of accidents or security breaches.

To address these issues, the petition proposes that the court direct the relevant authorities to ensure the moon sighting announcement is made promptly after confirmation, allowing the public ample time to prepare in an orderly manner. Additionally, Abdullah Shafiq Jan suggested that markets, except those specifically designated for Eid shopping, be closed during this period to help regulate crowds and enhance public safety. This measure, he believes, would facilitate smoother management of commercial activities and reduce pressure on security personnel.

This plea reflects a growing public sentiment for more efficient and transparent handling of religious observances that have significant social and economic implications. The Eid ul Fitr moon sighting has traditionally been a matter of great importance in Pakistan, with the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee playing a pivotal role in its announcement. However, the timing and communication of these announcements have often been criticized for causing uncertainty and logistical difficulties.

As the country prepares for the upcoming Eid holidays, this petition brings to light the need for reforms in the moon sighting process to better accommodate the needs of the population. The court’s response to this plea could set a precedent for future practices, potentially leading to more streamlined and predictable celebrations across Pakistan.
