Trump Asserts Full Authority to Impose Tariffs Despite Supreme Court Ruling

In a bold declaration on Sunday, former US President Donald Trump insisted that he still possesses the full authority to impose tariffs, despite a recent setback from the US Supreme Court, which invalidated his global tariff measures last month. Trump emphasized that he has already begun implementing tariffs through alternative methods, signaling his determination to continue his trade policies in a different guise. This statement was made through an extensive post on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he outlined his stance on the issue.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump swiftly responded by issuing an executive order that introduced a 10 percent tariff on imports entering the United States. This move demonstrated his intent to maintain pressure on foreign economies, even as the highest court challenged the legality of his previous tariff strategy. The administration’s trade agenda has recently intensified, with Washington launching new investigations into trade practices across 60 countries, including major economic powers such as China, the European Union, and Japan. These probes are focused on allegations of forced labor and whether certain trade practices unfairly restrict or burden American commerce.

Meanwhile, tensions between the US and China have escalated amid these developments. On the same day as Trump’s announcement, Beijing publicly urged Washington to “immediately correct its erroneous ways,” criticizing the US for its aggressive trade investigations. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce condemned the latest US actions as “extremely unilateral, arbitrary, and discriminatory,” accusing the United States of attempting to erect new trade barriers under the guise of enforcement. These remarks came as Chinese and American trade officials convened in Paris for a fresh round of negotiations expected to span two days, highlighting the ongoing complexity of the bilateral trade relationship.

Trump’s social media post also expressed frustration with the Supreme Court’s ruling, accusing the justices of disregarding his efforts to protect American economic interests. He claimed that the court’s decision could potentially result in the loss of trillions of dollars to foreign countries and corporations that have, in his view, exploited the United States for decades. This rhetoric reflects Trump’s longstanding narrative of prioritizing American economic sovereignty and combating what he perceives as unfair trade practices.

In addition to trade issues, Trump took aim at the judiciary in another post later that evening, criticizing federal judge James Boasberg for dismissing subpoenas related to an investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The probe concerns expenses associated with renovations to the Federal Reserve’s headquarters. Trump accused Boasberg of allowing political considerations to override legal principles, a charge that underscores his ongoing contentious relationship with the Federal Reserve and its leadership.

Trump has been openly critical of Powell’s monetary policies, particularly regarding interest rate decisions, which he believes have been detrimental to the economy. His discontent extends to attempts to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, whom he has accused of mortgage fraud, although the Supreme Court expressed skepticism about the grounds for her dismissal earlier this year. Reflecting on the judiciary, Trump described the Supreme Court as “completely inept and embarrassing,” lamenting that it has deviated from the vision of the nation’s founders and is causing harm to the country.

Despite acknowledging that his outspoken criticism of the Supreme Court might invite future challenges, Trump insisted that it is his duty to speak the truth as he sees it. His remarks highlight the ongoing tensions between the executive branch and the judiciary, as well as the broader political battles surrounding trade policy and economic governance in the United States.
