The much-anticipated 2026 Academy Awards ceremony has officially begun, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating night in Hollywood. As the evening unfolds, several films have already made their mark by securing early wins, signaling strong contenders in this year’s race for cinematic glory. Notably, productions such as Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, and Sinners have emerged as frontrunners, each capturing key awards that highlight their artistic and technical achievements.

While these titles have gained momentum, the competition remains intense across many categories, especially in the acting and Best Picture segments, where the outcome is still anyone’s guess. The diversity of nominees reflects a rich variety of storytelling and filmmaking styles, making this year’s Oscars one of the most unpredictable and exciting in recent memory. Below is a detailed overview of the nominees and winners announced so far, illustrating the dynamic landscape of this year’s Academy Awards.

In the category of Best Supporting Actress, Amy Madigan took home the award for her compelling performance in Weapons, standing out among a talented group that included Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, both recognized for their roles in Sentimental Value. The category also featured Wunmi Mosaku from Sinners and Teyana Taylor from One Battle After Another, underscoring the depth of female talent celebrated this year.

Animation enthusiasts saw KPop Demon Hunters clinch the Best Animated Feature Film award, triumphing over notable contenders like Arco, Elio, and the sequel Zootopia 2. Meanwhile, the Best Animated Short Film category was won by The Girl Who Cried Pearls, a testament to the creative storytelling flourishing in short-form animation.

Technical categories also showcased impressive craftsmanship. Kate Hawley’s work on Frankenstein earned the Best Costume Design award, while the film also secured Best Makeup and Hairstyling, highlighting its meticulous attention to visual detail. In casting, One Battle After Another was recognized for its outstanding ensemble selection, an essential element contributing to the film’s overall impact.

The Best Live Action Short Film category resulted in a rare tie, with both The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva sharing the honor. This unusual outcome reflects the Academy’s appreciation for diverse narratives and innovative filmmaking techniques in short films.

Among the male supporting actors, Sean Penn’s performance in One Battle After Another earned him the Oscar, edging out strong contenders such as Benicio del Toro and Jacob Elordi. This win adds to the film’s growing list of accolades and cements its status as a critical favorite.

Screenplay awards went to One Battle After Another for Best Adapted Screenplay, penned by Paul Thomas Anderson, and to Ryan Coogler’s Sinners for Best Original Screenplay. Coogler’s win was particularly notable, as it highlights his continued influence and creative vision within the industry. His film also received recognition for its original score, further emphasizing its artistic strengths.

Production design and visual effects were dominated by Frankenstein and Avatar: Fire and Ash, with the former winning Best Production Design and the latter taking home Best Visual Effects. These awards underscore the technical mastery and imaginative worlds crafted by the filmmakers, which have captivated audiences and critics alike.

Documentary categories saw All the Empty Rooms win Best Documentary Short Film, while Mr Nobody Against Putin took the top prize for Best Documentary Feature Film. These documentaries shed light on compelling real-world issues, demonstrating the power of non-fiction storytelling in today’s cinematic landscape.

Sound and music categories also highlighted exceptional work, with F1 winning Best Sound and Sinners securing Best Original Score. These elements play a crucial role in immersing viewers and enhancing the emotional resonance of the films.

As the night progresses, several major awards such as Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best International Feature Film, Best Original Song, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Directing, and ultimately Best Picture remain undecided. The nominees in these categories include a mix of established stars and emerging talents, making the final announcements highly anticipated by industry insiders and fans worldwide.

With a lineup featuring films like Bugonia, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value, the competition for the top honors is fierce. The 2026 Oscars continue to celebrate a diverse array of voices and visions, reflecting the evolving landscape of global cinema. As the ceremony unfolds, audiences eagerly await which films and artists will ultimately claim the coveted golden statuettes, marking another memorable chapter in the history of the Academy Awards.
