Medvedev Halts Alcaraz’s Winning Streak, Advances to Indian Wells Final Against Sinner

Daniil Medvedev delivered a stunning performance to bring an end to Carlos Alcaraz’s flawless start to the 2026 season, defeating the world number one 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) on Saturday. This victory secured Medvedev’s place in the Indian Wells final, where he will face Italy’s Jannik Sinner in what promises to be a thrilling title match. The Russian star’s win was particularly sweet as it avenged his back-to-back defeats to Alcaraz in the Indian Wells finals of 2023 and 2024, showcasing a commanding display of powerful serving and aggressive baseline tactics that kept the young Spaniard constantly on the defensive.

Reflecting on his triumph, Medvedev expressed his satisfaction at overcoming such a formidable opponent. “I’m super happy to beat someone as strong as he is,” he said. “It’s a great feeling.” His upcoming challenge will be no less daunting, as he prepares to face Jannik Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion who earned his spot in the final by defeating fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 in a confident display of skill and composure.

Alcaraz, aged just 22, has already carved out a remarkable career, becoming the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam with his Australian Open victory earlier this year. He followed that milestone with a title win in Qatar and entered Saturday’s match boasting an unblemished 16-0 record for 2026. However, Medvedev, who claimed the Dubai title last month, was more than ready to challenge the young prodigy. Battling in the intense desert heat, Medvedev pushed Alcaraz to his limits, extending his own ATP winning streak to nine matches in the process.

Alcaraz acknowledged the physical and mental demands of facing Medvedev, noting the taxing nature of their long rallies. “When you play against Daniil, the rallies are long, and you have to put extra power into almost every shot,” he explained. “It feels like you’re using extra energy after each point, and with the heat, it becomes even more difficult to manage.” This insight highlights the grueling conditions both players endured during the match, adding another layer of complexity to the contest.

The match began with Medvedev breaking Alcaraz’s serve once to take the first set, during which he did not face a single break point. In response, Alcaraz adjusted his strategy in the second set, breaking first to establish a 3-1 lead. Yet Medvedev immediately countered with a break of his own, demonstrating his resilience and control. One particularly long rally in the ninth game left Alcaraz visibly exhausted, underscoring Medvedev’s dominance in baseline exchanges. “The first set made me struggle a bit, but in the second, I started to feel better,” Alcaraz admitted. “I realized I had to suffer and accept it.”

Despite holding serve to lead 5-4 in the second set, Alcaraz was unable to capitalize on two set points in the following game, leading to a tiebreaker that Medvedev dominated. The Russian surged to a 6-1 lead in the breaker, sealing his place in the final with clinical precision. Alcaraz praised Medvedev’s aggressive and flawless play during the tiebreak, while Medvedev himself lauded the comprehensive skill set of his opponent. “He’s an amazing player with incredible shots, defense, attack, serve, and return,” Medvedev said. “You have to be at your best to beat him — and today, I was.”

Medvedev’s resurgence after a challenging 2025 season, during which his ranking dipped as low as 18th, has not gone unnoticed. Jannik Sinner, who will face Medvedev in the final, praised the Russian’s return to top form. “He’s back to a very high level with a big serve and excellent returns,” Sinner commented, acknowledging Medvedev’s status as the 2021 US Open champion. For Sinner, reaching the Indian Wells final marks a significant achievement after falling to Alcaraz in the semifinals in both 2023 and 2024.

In his semifinal match, Sinner delivered an impressive performance against Alexander Zverev, the world number four. Sinner’s solid baseline game and tactical precision allowed him to secure a 6-2, 6-4 victory, marking his sixth consecutive win over the German. Despite Zverev’s strong start with two flawless service games, errors began to creep into his play, allowing Sinner to break twice and take control of the match. Although Zverev showed renewed determination by saving three break points early in the second set, Sinner’s resilience shone through as he saved a break point with an ace and broke Zverev again to clinch the match.

As the Indian Wells final approaches, tennis fans can anticipate a high-stakes battle between Medvedev and Sinner, both players demonstrating exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament. Medvedev’s ability to overcome the young and dynamic Alcaraz, combined with Sinner’s consistent excellence, sets the stage for an electrifying conclusion to one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
