Drone Strikes Disrupt Radar System at Kuwait International Airport Amid Regional Tensions

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Kuwait has confirmed that Kuwait International Airport was recently targeted by several unmanned aerial vehicles, resulting in significant damage to the airport’s radar system. This incident marks a troubling escalation in the security challenges facing the region, as the airport’s critical infrastructure sustained material harm, though fortunately, no injuries or loss of life occurred during the attack.

In response to the situation, the airport promptly activated its emergency response plan, a protocol designed to handle such crises efficiently. This plan was implemented in close coordination with various national agencies to ensure the continued safety and security of civil aviation operations. The swift actions taken by the airport authorities helped contain the immediate impact of the attack and maintain operational stability amid growing regional unrest.

Officials have indicated that comprehensive technical evaluations and inspections are currently underway to fully assess the extent of the damage inflicted on the radar system. These assessments are crucial for planning the necessary repairs and restoring the radar to its full functional capacity, which is vital for the safe management of air traffic in and out of Kuwait.

It is important to note that this attack is not an isolated event. Earlier on March 12, Kuwait International Airport was also targeted by multiple drones, highlighting a pattern of repeated threats against the nation’s aviation infrastructure. Abdullah al-Rajhi, the spokesperson for the General Civil Aviation Authority, reiterated that the authority has been managing these incidents under a well-established emergency response framework that has been in place since the onset of the current crisis.

Rajhi emphasized the authority’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding civil aviation within Kuwait, stating that all necessary measures are being taken to protect the airport and its operations from further disruptions. This resolve comes at a time when regional military tensions have sharply intensified, particularly following the joint offensive launched by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28, which has contributed to an unstable security environment across the Middle East.

As the situation continues to evolve, Kuwait’s aviation authorities remain vigilant, working closely with security agencies to monitor potential threats and ensure that the airport remains a secure hub for international travel. The recent drone attacks serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by critical infrastructure in conflict-affected regions and underscore the importance of robust defense and emergency preparedness strategies.
