Hamas Urges Iran to Avoid Targeting Neighbors While Upholding Right to Defend Itself

In a significant statement from Cairo, the Palestinian militant group Hamas, known for its alignment with Iran, has publicly urged Tehran to avoid directing its military actions against neighboring countries. This marks the first time Hamas has openly addressed Iran’s regional policies amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel. While Hamas continues to express strong solidarity with Iran during this turbulent period, the group has notably refrained from threatening any retaliatory strikes itself.

Hamas emphasized that Iran retains the legitimate right to defend itself against what it describes as aggression by the US and Israel, using all available means in line with international laws and norms. However, the group simultaneously called on Iranian leadership to exercise restraint and avoid expanding the conflict by targeting countries in close proximity. This nuanced position reflects Hamas’s attempt to balance its support for Iran with concerns over regional stability and the potential for wider escalation.

Moreover, Hamas appealed to all nations in the Middle East, as well as international organizations, to intervene and bring an immediate end to the hostilities. The group highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing war and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to halt the violence. This call for peace comes despite the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which was initially implemented in October but has since been punctuated by frequent outbreaks of violence.

Since the ceasefire, Israeli military operations in Gaza had initially decreased but have gradually intensified again, raising tensions across the region. Meanwhile, Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group also backed by Iran, escalated hostilities by opening fire on Israel on March 2. This attack was reportedly in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader at the onset of the conflict. In response, Israel has launched extensive strikes against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, further complicating the security landscape.

In addition to Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthi rebels, another Iran-supported faction, have demonstrated their allegiance to Tehran by targeting maritime vessels in the Red Sea that they suspect of having ties to Israel. Despite their aggressive posture, the Houthis have so far stopped short of threatening renewed attacks, maintaining a cautious stance amid the broader regional conflict.

Overall, Hamas’s recent statement underscores the complex dynamics at play among Iran’s allied groups in the Middle East. While united in their opposition to US and Israeli actions, these factions appear to be navigating a delicate balance between supporting Tehran’s defense rights and avoiding an escalation that could engulf neighboring states. The evolving situation continues to pose significant challenges for regional peace and security, with international observers closely monitoring developments.
