Aqib Javed Faces Backlash Over Babar Azam’s Fitness and Selection Committee Queries

LAHORE: The Director of High Performance at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Aqib Javed, came under intense scrutiny and criticism from cricket fans and social media users following a press conference held on Saturday. During the session, Javed appeared evasive and hesitant when questioned about the fitness status of Pakistan’s star batsman, Babar Azam, as well as the presence of selection committee members at a major domestic tournament in Peshawar.

When a journalist inquired if the PCB had officially released any statement regarding Babar Azam’s current condition, Javed’s response was unclear and somewhat confusing. Babar, who has been reportedly resting due to injury after a series of underwhelming performances in crucial matches of the India-hosted 2026 T20 World Cup, remains a focal point of concern for fans and analysts alike. Despite widespread speculation, no formal announcement has been made public by the PCB confirming his fitness or unavailability.

Adding to the confusion, another question was raised about whether the members of the national selection committee were physically present at all matches of the ongoing domestic tournament in Peshawar, which plays a critical role in shaping the future of Pakistan cricket. Javed mentioned the chief selector’s name but seemed uncertain and struggled to provide a definitive answer. The awkward moment left many observers surprised and disappointed, especially given the importance of transparency in cricket administration.

In an unexpected move, Aqib Javed quickly shifted the conversation away from these pressing issues by inviting fellow official Mishab Ul Haq to take over the questioning. This abrupt change of topic further fueled criticism on social media platforms, where fans expressed their frustration over what they perceived as a lack of accountability. Comments ranged from sharp rebukes such as “Shame on him” to praise for the journalist who pressed for clarity, with one user stating, “Salute to the journalist for asking the tough questions.”

It is important to clarify that Babar Azam is indeed sidelined due to an injury and is currently undergoing management and rehabilitation. However, the absence of any formal fitness declaration from the PCB has left supporters and cricket pundits eager for official updates, especially as Pakistan prepares for upcoming international fixtures.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a fine on Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during a recent match against Bangladesh. The incident occurred when Salman Ali Agha, frustrated after being run out, threw his gloves and helmet onto the field in a display of dissent. The ICC took note of this behavior and issued a one demerit point penalty against the player.

Salman Ali Agha acknowledged his misconduct, which led to the disciplinary action. This episode underscores the ICC’s ongoing commitment to maintaining discipline and sportsmanship standards in international cricket. The governing body’s swift response serves as a reminder to players about the importance of respecting the spirit of the game, regardless of the pressure and emotions involved during high-stakes matches.
